Twelve people, including 10 middle school students, were hospitalized after an incident at Cultus Lake Waterpark. Investigation continues.
Emergency Response Unfolds During School Field Trip
What began as a fun day at one of British Columbia’s most popular waterparks quickly turned into a major emergency on Monday morning.
Twelve people were taken to hospital after an incident at Cultus Lake Waterpark, including 10 students from a Coquitlam middle school. Emergency crews rushed to the scene as concerns grew over the condition of those involved.
Students Among Those Injured
Students from Minnekhada Middle School were visiting the waterpark as part of a school field trip when the incident occurred.
According to the Coquitlam School District, 10 students suffered injuries and received medical assessments. School officials confirmed that all students remained in stable condition.
At this stage, authorities have not released details about the exact nature of the injuries. Likewise, the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
First Responders Arrive in Large Numbers
Meanwhile, emergency personnel responded rapidly after receiving reports from the waterpark around 11:20 a.m.
Members of the Chilliwack RCMP arrived alongside paramedics and other emergency crews. Police described the injuries as serious and continued gathering information throughout the day.
Investigators remained at the scene while officials worked to determine what happened.
Air and Ground Ambulances Deployed
In addition, BC Emergency Health Services sent significant resources to the waterpark.
Two air ambulances and several ground ambulances responded to the emergency. As a result, two patients were flown to hospital, while another 10 were transported by ground ambulance for further treatment.
Health officials have not provided additional information about the patients’ conditions.
Electrical Issue Identified
Although many questions remain unanswered, BC Hydro confirmed that crews responded after reports of an electrical problem at the site.
Following an initial assessment, utility workers determined the issue originated from the customer’s electrical service rather than BC Hydro infrastructure.
Furthermore, the utility company stated that public safety remains its top priority. Crews continue working closely with waterpark operators and investigators as the review moves forward.
Waterpark Closed Following Incident
Cultus Lake Waterpark, widely known as one of the largest water attractions in British Columbia, closed to the public on Monday.
The facility had been accepting school group bookings despite being closed for regular public admission, according to information available on its website.
As the investigation continues, officials have not indicated when normal operations will resume.
Investigation Continues
The incident occurred shortly after a weekend heat wave swept across B.C.’s Lower Mainland and set several temperature records.
For now, authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the event. More details are expected once investigators complete their review.
Meanwhile, families, students, and school staff await answers about what caused the emergency that disrupted what was meant to be a routine school outing.
