Ontario’s racing regulator investigates a puzzling Fort Erie race after favourite Princess O Denmark lost a massive late lead.
Investigation Underway
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has launched a review into a race at Fort Erie Racetrack on August 4, after an unexpected late turnaround saw heavy favourite Princess O Denmark lose despite holding a commanding lead in the stretch.
A Lead That Vanished
Ridden by veteran jockey Kirk Johnson, the four-year-old filly surged ahead early in the five-furlong turf race, opening a gap of roughly six lengths before the final turn. According to track announcer Doug McPherson, Princess O Denmark appeared to be “about 70 yards” clear of the competition entering the stretch.
The Puzzling Moments
Observers noted that Johnson remained high in the stirrups during the stretch run and glanced over his shoulder twice without urging the horse forward. By the time he began riding with hands and heels near the 16th pole, Rolling Roxxx had closed the gap and overtook the leader, winning by three-quarters of a length. McPherson described the finish as “very perplexing.”
Rider’s Record and Current Status
Johnson, who began his career in 2005, has recorded 934 victories from 7,786 career mounts, according to Equibase statistics. He will continue riding while the AGCO review is ongoing.
Track’s Response
James Culic, marketing and communications manager for the Fort Erie Live Race Consortium, said the racetrack takes the matter seriously. “We respect the integrity of the sport and will accept the findings of the AGCO’s investigation,” Culic stated, adding that the review is being conducted independently of the racetrack’s management.
Next Steps in the Process
The AGCO has not yet issued a public statement or timeline for the investigation’s conclusion. Once completed, officials will meet with the jockey before releasing their findings. Until then, Johnson remains eligible to compete, and the race replay is available on the Fort Erie Racing YouTube channel for public viewing.
