Surrey, B.C. launches 30 free self-service sports equipment stations in parks, a North American first, to boost community recreation and accessibility.

Surrey Makes Sports Gear Free and Accessible

The City of Surrey has become the first municipality in North America to introduce free, self-service sports equipment lending stations, giving residents year-round access to gear in parks across the city.

A City-Wide Rollout in Parks

Thirty stations are being installed at more than 20 locations, including Cloverdale Athletic Park, Tamanawis Park, Bear Creek Park, and South Surrey Athletic Park. Residents can borrow items such as soccer balls, basketballs, table tennis sets, and fitness gear — all without cost.

Breaking Barriers to Recreation

Mayor Brenda Locke said the initiative aims to eliminate financial and logistical hurdles that prevent people from participating in sports. “This free program ensures everyone can enjoy active living, fostering both community connection and inclusion,” she noted.

Powered by Global and Local Partnerships

The project is a collaboration between the City of Surrey, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, and Equip Sport — a Swiss company that has successfully operated over 400 similar lending stations across Europe. Toronto is expected to be the next Canadian city to follow Surrey’s lead.

No Cost to Residents or the City

Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities is funding the program, ensuring it comes at no cost to taxpayers. “Jumpstart is proud to help remove barriers so kids and families can enjoy the benefits of sport,” said Marco Di Buono, the charity’s president.

Simple App-Based Access

Residents can download the free Equip Sport app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, locate a nearby station, tap to unlock equipment, and start playing immediately.
