A Toronto man died in Weslemkoon Lake as Ontario police respond to a surge in marine incidents. Authorities urge public caution on waterways.

Toronto Man Drowns in Weslemkoon Lake

A 22-year-old man from Toronto was found dead Saturday evening after falling into Weslemkoon Lake, about 40 kilometres east of Bancroft, Ontario. The incident occurred early in the day and has prompted renewed safety warnings from provincial police amid a weekend spike in water-related emergencies.

Emergency Response and Search Efforts

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call at approximately 7:45 a.m. on July 12 reporting that a person had gone overboard in Weslemkoon Lake, located within the Township of Addington Highlands. OPP units — including marine, aviation, and underwater recovery teams — immediately launched a coordinated search operation.

By 8 p.m. Saturday, the body of the missing individual was recovered from the water. Police confirmed the deceased was a 22-year-old male from Toronto, though his name has not been released.

Charges Laid in Fatal Boating Incident

Following an investigation, OPP charged a 21-year-old Toronto man with several serious offences. Charges include operating a vessel causing death, and operating while impaired by alcohol and drugs. The accused has not been named, and further legal proceedings are pending.

Surge in Water-Related Emergencies

In a public safety message released Sunday afternoon, OPP officials warned of a “large number of marine incidents” reported over the weekend across Ontario. Officers from multiple detachments responded to emergency calls on OPP-patrolled waterways, underscoring the need for caution.

“This tragic loss reminds us of the consequences of impaired operation and the importance of water safety,” an OPP spokesperson said in a video posted on social media.

Broader Water Safety Concerns Across Region

The weekend’s incidents were not limited to Ontario. In western Quebec, emergency crews responded to another water tragedy on Sunday afternoon in Otter Lake, where a man was pulled from the water unresponsive.

Authorities Urge Preventive Action

With the summer boating season in full swing, police are calling on the public to wear life jackets, avoid impaired operation, and remain alert while on the water. Investigations into this and other recent incidents remain ongoing.
