Police arrested a man after he allegedly showed a gun at a New Westminster coffee shop. Officers later recovered the firearm and other prohibited weapons.
Police Respond Quickly to Early Morning Incident
A quiet Thursday morning took a tense turn when a man allegedly showed a firearm to another customer at a coffee shop in New Westminster.
The incident happened at about 6 a.m. on July 30 at a café patio in Columbia Square. After receiving a 911 call, officers from the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) arrived within minutes to investigate.
Suspect Tried to Escape Across Railway Tracks
As police reached the scene, the suspect ran away. He crossed Columbia Street, squeezed through a hole in a nearby fence, and headed across the railway tracks in an attempt to avoid officers.
However, police quickly launched a search. They used a drone to scan the area while the Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service joined the operation. As a result, officers found the suspect and arrested him without further incident.
Officers Recover Firearm and Other Weapons
After making the arrest, officers searched the suspect. During that search, they found several prohibited weapons, multiple knives, and cans of bear spray.
Soon after, investigators also recovered the firearm that was allegedly used during the incident. Police located the gun close to the area where the suspect had been arrested.
No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.
The NWPD has not released the suspect’s identity. Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case, and additional details could be released as the investigation moves forward.

Police continue to gather evidence and review the events that unfolded at Columbia Square. At this stage, investigators have not announced any charges or provided further information about the suspect.
