VIU students take on a sweet challenge to make a 1,100-lb Nanaimo bar, aiming to break a Canadian record and raise funds for new kitchen equipment.
In a delightful fusion of school spirit and sugary ambition, students at Vancouver Island University (VIU) are setting out to break a truly Canadian record—by creating the world’s largest Nanaimo bar.
A Dessert Dream: 1,100 Pounds of No-Bake Goodness
This weekend, VIU’s culinary arts and professional baking and pastry arts students will whip up an astonishing 1,100-pound version of the iconic no-bake treat. The gargantuan dessert will feature the classic layers of Graham cracker crumb crust, cocoa powder, coconut, custard, and rich chocolate topping.
The record attempt is more than just a sweet spectacle—it’s part of a fundraiser to help the university purchase new ovens for its culinary programs.
Community Invited to Witness the Record Attempt
The public is invited to join the festivities on Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Windsor Plywood Trades Discovery Centre on VIU’s Nanaimo campus. The giant Nanaimo bar will be cut and served at noon—offering a once-in-a-lifetime taste of Canadian culinary history in the making.
Challenging Ontario’s 529-Pound Record
The current title for the world’s largest Nanaimo bar belongs to Levack, Ontario, where a 529-pound bar was created in 2020. VIU’s bold attempt to more than double that size sets a high bar for sweet success.
