SIU clears Peel officer after fatal Mississauga shooting. Investigators say officer acted in self-defence during knife attack.
A Deadly Encounter in Mississauga
A police shooting in Mississauga has now been reviewed, and the outcome is clear. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has ruled that a Peel Regional Police officer acted lawfully when he shot a 19-year-old man during a tense and fast-moving incident in December 2025.
What Happened That Afternoon
On December 11, events unfolded quickly inside a home near Britannia Road and Winston Churchill Boulevard. First, the young man attacked a family member with a knife. Then, the injured relative ran बाहर and called for help.
Soon after, officers arrived and secured the area. At the same time, another family member shared urgent details. The man’s mental health had declined, and he had stopped taking medication. Moreover, he had spoken about suicide in the past.
Officers Enter a Dangerous Situation
Next, police moved inside the home. They found the man barricaded in a basement bathroom. Although officers gave clear commands, he did not respond.
As a result, they forced entry using a sledgehammer. Once inside, they saw him lying in the shower with water running and blood nearby. Even then, officers kept giving commands. However, the situation changed in seconds.
The Moment Force Was Used
At 3:25 p.m., one officer used a Taser. Immediately after, the man got up holding a knife and rushed toward an officer.
In response, another officer fired his rifle. First, three shots rang out in quick succession. Then, two more followed within seconds. Throughout this moment, officers shouted for him to drop the weapon.
Aftermath and Medical Response
Right after the shooting, officers moved in and provided first aid. Paramedics arrived quickly and took the man to hospital. Sadly, doctors pronounced him dead at 4:04 p.m.
SIU Finds No Grounds for Charges
After reviewing body camera footage and evidence, the SIU reached its conclusion. Director Joseph Martino stated there was no basis for criminal charges.
He explained that the officer faced an immediate and serious threat. Therefore, the use of lethal force was justified.
However, he did note that the final two shots required closer review. Even so, evidence showed the man still held the knife and remained a danger.
A Case That Raises Tough Questions
This case highlights the difficult decisions officers must make in seconds. At the same time, it also brings attention to mental health challenges and the risks they can create during crises.
In the end, the SIU closed the file. Yet, the incident leaves lasting questions about safety, response, and support for those in distress.
