Hundreds of Ukrainians and Canadians gathered at Harris Park in London, Ontario on Sunday to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day with the city’s first Ukrainian Festival. The event featured music, dancing, and traditional food, creating a mix of joy and solemn reflection as the war in Ukraine entered its fourth year.
Marking 34 Years of Independence
The festival coincided with the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. For many in attendance, the milestone carried deeper meaning this year. “It’s a very special day for us,” said Ilona Yatsuliak, who moved to London with her family in 2023. “When I think about freedom, especially now during the war, it feels more important than ever.”
Stories of Displacement and Resilience
Attendees shared personal stories of fleeing war and rebuilding lives in Canada. Alona Zabihailo, who came to Ontario in 2022 with her son, said every Independence Day serves as a reminder of endurance. “It doesn’t matter where we are. This day is for all Ukrainians. We survived, and we are stronger every day,” she said.
Family Ties Amid Conflict
For others, the celebration was shadowed by concern for loved ones still in Ukraine. Mariia Kravets, now living in Monkton, Ont., said her father remains in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border. “They wake up every night to rockets and drones overhead. You never know if you’ll wake up in the morning,” she said. Despite the hardship, she added, “No matter where we are, we will always be Ukrainians.”
Preserving Culture Through Tradition
Vendors and demonstrators brought Ukrainian heritage to life at the festival, offering pierogies, pastries, teas, and handcrafted items. Longtime London resident Orysia Stepaniuk showcased traditional embroidery, reflecting on the changes in the community since 2022. “The newcomers bring a new breath to London. The community feels stronger and more connected,” she said.
Unity Across Borders
Organizers and attendees emphasized that the festival was not only a cultural celebration but also a symbol of resilience. For London’s growing Ukrainian community, Independence Day underscored the importance of unity, freedom, and identity, whether in Canada or abroad.
