Delta firefighters earned multiple gold medals at the Canadian Firefit Championships, proving their strength, teamwork, and skill on home turf.
Delta Firefighters Strike Gold at Firefit Championships
Delta firefighters proved they are among Canada’s finest after delivering standout performances at the Canadian Firefit Championships in Tsawwassen.
Moreover, the hometown team thrilled local supporters by capturing gold medals in several events during the two-day competition, held May 30 and 31 at Southlands Grange.
Delta Team Rises to the Top
Firefighters face intense challenges every day. However, on the Firefit course, they put those same skills to the test in front of cheering crowds.
As a result, Delta Fire and Emergency Services members turned in impressive performances throughout the weekend.
In the highly competitive team relay event, Capt. Jamie McGarva joined firefighters Fraser O’Neill, Terril Hagar and Nick Meerstra to secure the gold medal for Delta.
Meanwhile, Yanne Defresne and Maddison O’Keeffe claimed first place in the female tandem division, adding another gold medal to the community’s growing collection.
Firefit Challenges Test Real-World Skills
The Firefit Championships are designed to mirror the demanding tasks firefighters perform on the job.
Competitors race through a challenging course that includes climbing towers, carrying heavy hoses, forcing entry through barriers and rescuing victims. At the same time, they wear full firefighting gear and breathing apparatus, which adds another layer of difficulty.
Therefore, success requires strength, endurance, speed and teamwork.
Community Support Helps Drive Success
According to Delta firefighter and team lead Dave Mason, strong community support played a major role in bringing the event back to the city.
“This event came together through our awesome community’s generous sponsorship and support,” Mason said.
In addition, he highlighted the contribution of volunteers, many of whom hope to build careers in firefighting.
Mason also noted that local firefighters were proud to showcase their teamwork and demonstrate the physical demands of their profession.
Furthermore, the event allowed residents to gain a closer look at the dedication required to serve their community.
Competitors Travelled From Across Western Canada
The championship attracted firefighters from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Yukon. Teams also travelled from Washington State to take part in the action.
Consequently, the event featured a high level of competition and gave local firefighters the opportunity to measure themselves against top talent from across the region.
Strongman Showcase Adds Extra Excitement
The action did not stop with firefighting events.
During halftime, spectators enjoyed a Fraser Valley’s Strongest competition that featured remarkable displays of power.
Dylan Dorsey impressed the crowd with a 159-kilogram (350-pound) log press. Meanwhile, Tom Gunson lifted an incredible 385 kilograms (850 pounds) in the wagon wheel lift.
As a result, fans were treated to a full day of athletic excellence.
Attention Turns to National Finals
With Delta now in the rear-view mirror, competitors are already preparing for the next challenge.
The Firefit circuit continues this weekend in Leduc, Alberta. After that, firefighters will set their sights on the national finals in Fredericton, New Brunswick, scheduled for September.
Given the performances in Tsawwassen, Delta’s firefighters will enter the upcoming events with plenty of momentum and confidence.
