A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Vancouver Island Friday night. Residents felt shaking, but officials reported no damage or injuries.

Another Strong Earthquake Rattles Vancouver Island Waters

Residents across parts of British Columbia felt the ground move again after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Vancouver Island late Friday night.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the quake happened just before 10 p.m. The epicentre was about 181 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy. Although the earthquake occurred far offshore, people reported feeling light shaking in several communities, including Victoria.

Fortunately, no injuries or property damage have been reported.

Shaking Felt Across Parts of British Columbia

Even though the earthquake happened beneath the Pacific Ocean, the tremor travelled a considerable distance. As a result, residents in different areas noticed the shaking and shared their experiences.

Emergency officials, however, have not received reports of significant impacts. Therefore, there is no indication that the earthquake caused damage to homes, roads, or other infrastructure.

Second Moderate Earthquake in One Week

This latest event follows another offshore earthquake that struck the same region only a week earlier.

On July 19, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake occurred about 219 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy. That quake also originated beneath the ocean at a depth of 10 kilometres. Likewise, residents felt shaking, yet officials confirmed no damage after the event.

Because both earthquakes happened offshore, the risk of widespread destruction remained low. Even so, the back-to-back tremors remind British Columbians that the province sits in one of Canada’s most active seismic regions.

Officials Continue to Monitor Seismic Activity

Earthquakes Canada continues to monitor seismic activity along the west coast. While moderate offshore earthquakes are not unusual, experts encourage residents to stay prepared for future events.

Having an emergency kit, securing heavy furniture, and knowing what to do during an earthquake can help reduce risks if stronger shaking occurs.

For now, the latest earthquake serves as another reminder of the region’s active geology. Thankfully, this event ended without injuries or reported damage.
