A routine morning at a downtown Vancouver convenience store quickly turned tense after an employee confronted an alleged shoplifting suspect who reportedly pulled a knife during the encounter.
Employee Confronts Suspect Over Alleged Theft
The incident unfolded around 6 a.m. on May 29 near the intersection of Granville Street and Drake Street, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
Police say a store employee approached a man outside the business after noticing a box of cookies had allegedly been stolen. However, the situation escalated moments later.
Alleged Threats Made During Heated Encounter
Investigators say the suspect not only took the merchandise but also threatened to damage a vehicle. When the employee challenged him about the alleged theft, the man reportedly displayed a knife.
As a result, concerns for safety rose quickly, and police were called to the scene.
Arrest Made Just Blocks Away
Soon after the report came in, Vancouver police located the suspect roughly one block from the store.
Officers arrested the man without incident, bringing the confrontation to a swift end.
Multiple Charges Approved
Following the investigation, the BC Prosecution Service approved several charges against a 47-year-old Vancouver man.
The charges include:
- Assault with a weapon
- Uttering threats to damage property
- Theft under $5,000
Therefore, the case is now moving through the court system.
Court Appearance Scheduled
Although the accused was released under several conditions, the legal process continues.
Police say the man is scheduled to return to court on June 8, where the charges will be addressed.
