MAPLE BAY, B.C. — A heavy police presence has drawn attention in Maple Bay, while RCMP officers continue a search near Mt. Tzouhalem.
As a result, one of North Cowichan’s popular outdoor spots is now closed to the public.
Police Ask Public to Stay Away
North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are asking people to avoid trails around Mt. Tzouhalem and Maple Bay.
Specialized police teams are also helping with the ongoing search.
However, RCMP say there is no shelter-in-place order.
Instead, officers are asking residents and visitors to stay clear of the area. This will help police carry out their work safely and without disruption.
Mt. Tzouhalem Trails Are Closed
The Municipality of North Cowichan confirmed that access to Mt. Tzouhalem has been closed because of a police incident.
The closure includes parking areas and trails.
Therefore, people should avoid heading into the area until officials provide further notice.
School Remains Open for Now
The Cowichan Valley School District says it knows about the large police presence in the Maple Bay neighbourhood.
For now, Maple Bay Elementary remains open and is following its regular school schedule.
Meanwhile, the district says families will receive updates if the situation changes.
RCMP Ask for Information
Police have not released further details about the search.
