A hateful graffiti targeting Indians in Mississauga has triggered massive outrage, with community members calling it a disturbing sign of rising racism in Canada.
The graffiti, which referred to Indians as “rats,” was spotted in a public space and quickly condemned by local leaders and residents. Many called the act not just offensive but dangerous, as it spreads hate against one of Canada’s largest immigrant communities.
The incident comes at a time when Prime Minister Mark Carney has been vocal about welcoming skilled workers, particularly H-1B visa holders from the U.S., to strengthen Canada’s workforce.
Community organizations and anti-racism advocates say the graffiti is at odds with the country’s multicultural values. “Racism only hurts Canada,” one community leader said, urging stronger action against hate crimes.
Peel Regional Police are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime. Authorities have called on residents to report any related activity and reaffirmed their commitment to community safety.
The Indian community, which makes up a significant part of Mississauga’s population, has expressed fear and disappointment. Many are demanding both accountability and education efforts to ensure such incidents do not recur.
