Vancouver pushes for an MLB expansion team as mayor launches bid process, aiming to bring pro baseball back to the city.

Vancouver Steps Up to the Plate

Vancouver could soon swing for the big leagues. Mayor Ken Sim has announced a bold move to bring a Major League Baseball (MLB) team to the city. As excitement builds, city council will review a motion on April 22 that could kick off the process.

A Plan to Attract the Right Owners

First, the city wants to find the right partners. Sim’s proposal calls for an “expression of interest” process. In simple terms, this means potential ownership groups can step forward and present their ideas.

However, there’s a catch. Any group must show strong finances, solid experience, and a clear plan. In other words, Vancouver wants a team that can succeed from day one. Sim also highlighted the city’s strong sports culture, noting fans here support their teams with passion.

MLB Expansion Talks Spark Opportunity

Meanwhile, MLB has already hinted at expansion. Commissioner Rob Manfred said last year that adding another Canadian team could work. Because of that, Vancouver now sees a real chance to join the league.

Even so, timing matters. The league cannot adjust its structure until December, when its current agreement expires. Therefore, any expansion decision will take time.

A Look Back at Vancouver’s Baseball History

Vancouver is no stranger to baseball. In fact, B.C. Place hosted several MLB exhibition games between 1984 and 1994. Fans once watched teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners play in the city.

However, things changed over time. A major renovation in 2011 upgraded the stadium but made it less ideal for baseball. As a result, a new venue or major changes would likely be needed.

What Comes Next

For now, all eyes are on city council. If the motion passes, Vancouver will begin its search for a team owner. Then, the real work begins.

While challenges remain, the dream feels closer than ever. And if everything lines up, Vancouver could soon hear the crack of the bat in its own MLB ballpark.
