Three men died after a clam-fishing boat capsized near Powell River, B.C. Two survived, and an investigation is underway.

Tragedy on the Water Near Powell River

It started like a normal night on the water. However, it ended in heartbreak off the coast of Powell River.

Three men lost their lives after a clam-fishing boat capsized near the Sunshine Coast. Meanwhile, two other men survived the incident and made it to shore safely.

Boat Fails to Return on Time

First, concern grew when the vessel did not return to Lund Harbour as expected. As a result, emergency crews were called in quickly.

Then, around 10 p.m. on Thursday, the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre launched a full search operation. In addition, the Royal Canadian Air Force and a coast guard lifeboat joined the effort.

Meanwhile, search teams focused their efforts near Savary Island, which sits about 20 kilometres northwest of Powell River.

Discovery in Rough Waters

After that, search crews found the overturned boat about 1,000 metres off Savary Island. At that point, hope remained for the missing men.

However, two men had already reached shore safely. Sadly, three others were still missing at that time.

Then, searchers began a detailed shoreline sweep. As a result, they later found the bodies of all three missing men.

Survivors Taken to Hospital

Meanwhile, the two survivors were transported to hospital in Powell River for treatment and care. Fortunately, they survived the ordeal.

Afterward, authorities confirmed that the BC Coroners Service is now investigating the deaths.

Investigation Now Underway

Right now, officials are working to understand what caused the boat to capsize. However, details remain limited.

Still, the focus is on answering key questions. For example, what conditions led to the accident? Also, was equipment or weather a factor?

Finally, more updates are expected as investigators continue their work.
