A major fire destroys a Penticton long-term care construction site, damages nearby homes, and triggers evacuations as crews battle flames.
Massive Fire Destroys Penticton Care Home Site
Blaze erupts late at night
First, a huge fire broke out in Kampe estate in Penticton. It started shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Then, flames grew fast. After that, people saw bright fire across the city. Also, the site was a future 200-bed care home project.
Next, the fire spread through the construction zone. As a result, the whole site was destroyed.
Flames light up the sky
Then, the fire got very big. In fact, it could be seen from far away. Meanwhile, witness videos showed flames rising high into the night sky. Also, one witness said the fire reached over 30 metres high.
After that, nearby trees were burned. So, the scene looked very severe. Because of this, fear spread in the area.
Fast response from firefighters
Next, crews rushed in quickly. Sixty firefighters joined the fight. Also, teams came from nearby places. These included Summerland, Naramata, Kaleden, and the Penticton Indian Band.
Meanwhile, firefighters worked hard to stop more damage. However, a crane on site became unsafe. So, it slowed full cleanup work.
Still, progress was made. After that, much of the fire was brought under control by Thursday morning.
Evacuations and road impacts
Then, the city acted fast. As a result, 12 homes stayed under evacuation orders. Also, four homes were damaged.
Meanwhile, people were told to avoid the Green Avenue area. In addition, parts of Highway 97 stayed closed. Traffic moved slowly in one lane.
