Coquitlam Investigation Leads to Firearms Charges

A 35-year-old Coquitlam man is facing several firearms-related charges after a police investigation led officers to search properties in Coquitlam and Surrey.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) says its Illegal Firearm Enforcement Team (IFET) spent weeks investigating the case before obtaining an arrest warrant for the suspect in June.

Search Warrants Uncover Two Handguns

On July 16, investigators carried out search warrants at two properties linked to the investigation. One property was in Coquitlam, while the other was in Surrey.

During the searches, officers found and seized two handguns. Police identified them as a Beretta 92FS .22-calibre handgun and a Beretta M9A3 9 mm handgun.

The seizure marked a key step in the investigation and resulted in several criminal charges.

Multiple Firearms Offences Filed

Following the searches, the accused now faces six firearms-related charges, including:

Two counts of possessing a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm without the required authorization, licence, and registration certificate.

Two counts of possessing a prohibited firearm at a location where it was not authorized.

Two counts of improperly storing a restricted firearm.

Court Appearance Set for August

The accused remains in custody as the case moves through the court system.

He is scheduled to appear in court on August 10, where the charges will be addressed as the legal process continues.

The post Coquitlam Man Charged After Police Seize Two Handguns first appeared on Maple News Wire.

A Surrey officer faces no criminal charges after a fatal crash while responding to a high-priority call, according to B.C.’s police watchdog.

Surrey Officer Cleared After Fatal Crash During Emergency Call

A Surrey police officer will not face criminal charges after a deadly crash that happened while the officer was responding to an emergency call last year.

The decision came from British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which reviewed the incident and found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Officer Was Responding to High-Priority Domestic Violence Call

The crash happened on Dec. 14 during the early evening as the officer travelled to a reported domestic violence incident.

At the time, the officer was driving an unmarked police vehicle with emergency lights and a siren activated. However, vehicle data showed the car reached speeds of up to 121 km/h.

According to the IIO report, the police vehicle struck a woman who entered the roadway while jogging. Furthermore, one witness told investigators that the officer likely had less than a second to react.

Investigators Considered Road Conditions and Emergency Risks

The investigation also examined the conditions surrounding the crash. The woman was wearing dark clothing, and the road was dark and wet at the time of the collision.

In addition, family members told investigators that the woman had significant hearing loss, including deafness in her left ear and partial hearing loss in her right ear.

Jessica Berglund, the IIO’s Chief Civilian Director, said the officer had to make a difficult decision between responding quickly to a possible threat and reducing risks on the road.

Moreover, police were still unsure whether other people could be in danger, even after receiving updated information that the reported domestic violence victim may have left the location safely.

Witnesses Describe the Moments Before the Collision

The report included accounts from drivers who were nearby when the crash occurred.

One civilian driver said the pedestrian appeared to move quickly onto the road. Meanwhile, a passenger in another vehicle said they may have hit the woman if they had not slowed down when they noticed the police vehicle.

Therefore, investigators considered whether the crash could have happened even if the officer had been travelling within the speed limit.

Watchdog Finds No Criminal Conduct by Officer

Berglund concluded that the evidence did not support criminal charges against the officer.

She noted that reducing speed may have been a safer choice after police learned more about the original call. However, she said the officer’s decision, based on the information available at the time, was not unreasonable enough to be considered criminal.

As a result, the IIO will not send the case to provincial prosecutors for possible charges.

The investigation now concludes with the officer cleared of criminal wrongdoing, while the victim’s family continues to deal with the loss caused by the tragic collision.

The post Surrey Police Officer Cleared After Fatal Jogger Crash first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Surrey Rider Hit With $1,700 in Fines After Dangerous Highway 1 Ride

A risky motorcycle ride on Highway 1 has ended with hefty fines for a Surrey man after dashcam footage helped BC Highway Patrol identify him within days.

The incident has also served as a reminder that dangerous driving can carry serious consequences, especially when clear video evidence is available.

Dashcam Footage Captures Reckless Riding

The incident happened on July 3 near 176th Street on Highway 1. According to BC Highway Patrol, another driver’s dashcam recorded the motorcyclist weaving through traffic at high speed while making dangerous lane changes.

The footage clearly showed both the motorcycle and its licence plate. As a result, investigators quickly identified the rider.

Police Locate Rider Within Four Days

Officers tracked down the 23-year-old Surrey motorcyclist just four days after the incident.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol said high-quality dashcam footage and a witness willing to testify can make it much easier for police to investigate dangerous driving cases.

He added that officers will continue to pursue extreme driving violations whenever strong evidence is available.

Dangerous Driving Could Have Ended in Tragedy

McLaughlin said the rider’s speed and unsafe actions created a serious risk on one of B.C.’s busiest highways.

He noted that it is easy to see how the behaviour captured on video could have resulted in a fatal crash. Because of that, police stress that reckless driving puts not only the driver at risk but also everyone else sharing the road.

Rider Receives $1,769 in Tickets

Following the investigation, the 23-year-old received a total of $1,769 in traffic fines.

BC Highway Patrol says enforcement remains a key part of improving road safety across the province. Officials also acknowledge that aggressive and reckless driving frustrates responsible motorists. Therefore, they say meaningful penalties help discourage dangerous behaviour and encourage safer choices behind the wheel.

Police continue to remind drivers and riders that dashcams often provide valuable evidence, making it increasingly difficult for dangerous driving to go unnoticed.

The post Surrey Rider Fined $1,700 After Highway 1 Stunt first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Residents in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood woke up to a troubling scene after several parked vehicles were vandalized before sunrise. Now, Surrey Police Service is asking the public to help identify two suspects believed to be responsible.

Nine Vehicles Targeted in Early Morning Incident

The incident happened at about 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, near 75 Avenue and 147A Street in Newton.

Police received reports that two people were actively smashing the windows of vehicles parked along the road. Officers responded quickly. However, the suspects left the area before police arrived.

When investigators examined the scene, they found that nine vehicles had suffered damage. Front, rear, and side windows were all broken during the incident.

CCTV Images Could Help Identify Suspects

As the investigation continues, Surrey Police Service has collected CCTV footage from the area. Investigators have also released still images in the hope that someone will recognize the individuals involved.

According to police, both suspects appear to be men with slim builds. They were dressed in dark clothing and were seen carrying clubs or bats, which were allegedly used to smash the vehicle windows.

Police Ask Witnesses to Come Forward

Investigators believe local residents and drivers may have information that could move the case forward. Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area or has CCTV or dashcam footage from around the time of the incident is encouraged to contact police.

Surrey Police Service is also asking anyone who recognizes the suspects shown in the released images to get in touch.

Anyone with information can call Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502 and reference file number 26-73430 (SP).

Investigation Continues

Police continue to review evidence as they work to identify the suspects and determine the full circumstances surrounding the vandalism. Meanwhile, investigators hope information from the public will help bring those responsible to justice.

The post Nine Vehicles Damaged in Surrey, Police Seek Suspects first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Surrey Police Seize $6.6M in Suspected Counterfeit Designer Goods

A year-long police investigation has uncovered a massive stash of suspected counterfeit luxury and sports merchandise in Surrey, leading to the seizure of goods linked to an estimated $6.6 million in lost retail sales.

The operation, known as Project Prada, resulted in the arrest of one man and the recovery of thousands of suspected fake products, including sports jerseys, designer handbags, jewellery, watches, footwear, and clothing.

Year-Long Investigation Leads to Major Seizure

The investigation began in June 2025 after the Surrey Police Service (SPS) received information from the Canadian Anti-Counterfeiting Network (CACN) about suspected counterfeit goods being sold in Surrey.

Investigators from the SPS Prolific Offender Unit followed several leads throughout the year. As they gathered evidence, they connected the alleged operation to a Surrey residence linked to a person of interest.

Then, on June 17, 2026, detectives executed a search warrant at the property. Officers arrested one man and seized a large collection of suspected counterfeit merchandise.

Thousands of Suspected Fake Designer Items Recovered

Police recovered a wide range of products carrying the names of some of the world’s best-known sports and luxury brands.

Among the items seized were:

536 Adidas soccer, NBA and NHL jerseys

1,758 Nike soccer, NFL, NBA and MLB jerseys

131 CCM NHL jerseys

203 Louis Vuitton clothing items and handbags

673 Gucci bags and footwear items

340 Christian Dior clothing, bags, jewellery and footwear pieces

85 Cartier watches, sunglasses and jewellery pieces

Police estimate the merchandise represents about $6.6 million in lost retail sales if sold as genuine products.

Investigation Remains Underway

Although officers arrested one suspect during the search, he was later released from police custody while the investigation continues.

Surrey Police have not announced any charges at this stage. Investigators continue to examine the seized items as the case moves forward.

Early Morning Gunfire Triggers Surrey Police Investigation

Surrey Police Service (SPS) is investigating after gunfire damaged a home in Surrey’s Cloverdale neighbourhood early Tuesday morning.

According to police, officers were called after a homeowner in the 16500 block of 58 Avenue discovered what appeared to be bullet damage. Shortly after, frontline officers arrived and confirmed the damage came from a firearm.

The incident happened at about 2:51 am on July 7, 2026. At the time, people were inside the residence; however, thankfully, no one was hurt.

Extortion Response Team Takes Lead

Meanwhile, SPS’s Extortion Response Team has taken charge of the investigation. At this stage, police believe the shooting may be connected to an extortion-related matter.

In addition, investigators are working to collect more information and identify anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity before or after the shooting.

Police Seek Dashcam and CCTV Footage

SPS is asking residents and drivers in the area to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation.

Therefore, anyone who was nearby at the time, saw something unusual, has dashcam footage, or has home security video from the area is encouraged to contact police.

Residents with information can call the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 26-70031 (SP).

As the investigation continues, police are reminding the public that even small details may help officers piece together what happened.

The post Surrey Shooting Probe: Police Investigate Cloverdale Incident first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Surrey Police seized suspected fake jerseys, luxury goods and clothing worth $6.6M after a yearlong counterfeit goods investigation.

Yearlong “Project Prada” Leads to Major Seizure

Surrey Police Service (SPS) has uncovered a massive counterfeit goods operation after a yearlong investigation known as “Project Prada”. As a result, police arrested one person and seized a wide range of suspected fake products linked to millions of dollars in lost retail sales.

The investigation began in June 2025. At that time, the SPS Prolific Offender Unit (POU) received information from the Canadian Anti-Counterfeiting Network (CACN) about possible counterfeit clothing and products being sold in Surrey.

Soon after receiving the information, investigators identified a person of interest and began collecting evidence. Over the following year, police tracked suspected sales activity connected to a Surrey residence.

Police Recover Thousands of Suspected Fake Items

Then, on June 17, 2026, POU detectives secured and carried out a search warrant at the location. During the search, one man was arrested, while a large collection of suspected counterfeit goods was recovered.

Overall, police estimated the seized items represented about $6.6 million in lost retail sales. The products included sports jerseys, designer clothing, watches, jewellery, handbags, footwear, and other luxury items.

Among the seized goods were:

536 Adidas jerseys from soccer, NBA, and NHL collections

1,758 Nike jerseys from soccer, NFL, NBA, and MLB collections

131 CCM NHL jerseys

375 Mitchell & Ness jerseys and caps from NBA, NFL, and MLB collections

28 pieces of Hermès jewellery and footwear

203 Louis Vuitton clothing items and handbags

673 Gucci bags and footwear items

340 Christian Dior clothing, bags, jewellery, and footwear pieces

117 Burberry clothing items

120 Bathing Ape clothing items

19 Rolex watches

85 Cartier watches, sunglasses, and jewellery pieces

Investigation Continues After Arrest

Meanwhile, the investigation remains active as SPS continues reviewing the evidence. The suspect was released from police custody shortly after the arrest.

For now, police have not shared further details about possible charges. However, SPS says the investigation is ongoing as officers work to understand the full scope of the suspected counterfeit operation.

The post Surrey Police Seize $6.6M in Counterfeit Goods first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Surrey starts the next phase of City Hall parkade repairs with an $815,220 project. The parkade will stay open while upgrades wrap up this November.

Surrey Approves New Phase of City Hall Parkade Repairs

Drivers using the Surrey City Hall parkade can expect improvement work over the next few months. The good news is that the facility will stay open while crews complete the upgrades.

Surrey City Council has approved an $815,220 contract for the next stage of the City Hall parkade restoration project. This phase will focus on fixing issues on the P1 and P2 parking levels.

Parkade Will Stay Open During Construction

The City has planned the work in stages to reduce the impact on visitors and staff. As a result, the parkade will continue to operate throughout construction, allowing people to park while repairs take place.

The parkade is located at 13450 104 Avenue beside Surrey City Centre Library, 3 Civic Plaza, and the nearby campuses of KPU and SFU. Since opening in 2013, it has provided about 800 parking spaces across three levels. Drivers can enter from both 104 Avenue and University Drive.

More Than a Decade of Daily Use

After more than 10 years of regular use, parts of the concrete and protective traffic deck coating have naturally worn down.

According to a City staff report, repairs are now needed to protect the structure and help extend the life of the facility. Earlier inspections by a structural engineer and a parking structure remediation specialist identified several areas that required attention.

What the Project Includes

The latest phase will improve several parts of the parkade. Crews will carry out:

Targeted concrete surface repairs

Full-depth replacement of worn traffic deck coatings in selected areas

Crack repairs on concrete slabs

Surface preparation and new protective coatings

Drainage system upgrades

Replacement of expansion joints

Together, these improvements will strengthen the structure and help keep the parkade in good condition for years to come.

Previous Repairs Set the Stage

This project follows earlier work on the parkade entrance ramps. That phase was completed in 2025 after Surrey awarded a $936,400 contract for the repairs.

With the ramp work finished, crews will now focus on restoring the parking levels to improve durability and support long-term performance.

Project Expected to Finish This Fall

Construction is scheduled to reach substantial completion by November. By carrying out the work in phases, Surrey aims to maintain access to parking while completing important upgrades with as little disruption as possible.

The post Surrey City Hall Parkade Repairs Move Into Next Phase first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Surrey’s Highway 99 interchange project moves forward, aiming to reduce congestion, improve access, and support rapid growth in South Surrey.

A major transportation upgrade in South Surrey is one step closer to becoming a reality.

As the community continues to grow at a rapid pace, city leaders are moving ahead with a long-awaited Highway 99 interchange project designed to improve traffic flow, support new housing, and create safer routes for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

New Highway 99 Access Planned for South Surrey

The City of Surrey, working alongside the Province of British Columbia, is advancing plans for the 24 Avenue and Highway 99 Interchange Ramps project.

The proposed upgrade will add new north-facing entrance and exit ramps along Highway 99. As a result, traffic congestion in the area could ease significantly while providing better access for residents and businesses.

City officials say the existing transportation network is struggling to keep pace with population growth and future housing targets. Therefore, the interchange project has become a key part of Surrey’s long-term infrastructure strategy.

Major Road and Overpass Improvements Included

The project extends beyond new highway ramps.

Plans also call for improvements to the Highway 99 overpass and the widening of 20 Avenue between 160 Street and Oak Meadows Drive. The upgraded corridor will feature four traffic lanes, enhanced pedestrian facilities, dedicated cycling infrastructure, new traffic signals, and modern street lighting.

These changes aim to create a safer and more efficient transportation network for all road users.

Council Approves Preliminary Design Work

Surrey City Council recently approved a contract for the project’s preliminary design phase. At the same time, council authorized an agreement with the provincial government to share the costs of engineering design services.

According to city documents, the design work will include a new southbound off-ramp connected to a fully signalized intersection at 24 Avenue. In addition, a partial westbound-to-northbound right-turn on-ramp will be added.

The project will also upgrade active transportation routes. Existing sidewalks and cycling lanes will give way to wider multi-use pathways that extend beyond the highway ramps on both sides of the overpass.

Funding Decision Will Shape Next Steps

City staff expect the preliminary design phase to wrap up by November 2026.

However, the future of the project will depend on provincial funding approval. Until that decision is made, construction timelines and later project stages remain uncertain.

Croydon Drive Realignment Required

The interchange development will also bring changes to nearby road connections.

Croydon Drive, which currently runs parallel to Highway 99 and connects with 20 Avenue near the proposed overpass, will need to be closed at its existing access point.

To maintain connectivity, the road will be realigned and linked back to 20 Avenue in the future. That work will move forward once the necessary land becomes available through ongoing development projects in the area.

Another Major Upgrade Planned Along 24 Avenue

Meanwhile, Surrey is also preparing for another significant infrastructure project nearby.

The city has issued a request for bids for road and watermain upgrades along 24 Avenue between 172 Street and 166 Street, including improvements on adjacent side streets.

The planned work covers excavation, asphalt paving, road markings, signage installation, pedestrian and traffic signals, streetlights, drainage upgrades, and new underground water infrastructure.

Crews are expected to install roughly 1,200 metres of new watermain along 24 Avenue and another 820 metres along 172 Street.

Supporting Surrey’s Rapid Growth

With South Surrey continuing to attract new residents and development, transportation improvements are becoming increasingly important.

The Highway 99 interchange project and related infrastructure upgrades are expected to strengthen mobility, improve safety, and help the city accommodate future growth while keeping people and goods moving efficiently across the region.

The post Surrey Highway 99 Interchange Project Gains Momentum first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Surrey City Centre Growth Fuels Demand for More Energy Capacity

Surrey’s rapid transformation shows no signs of slowing down. As new housing developments continue to reshape City Centre, the city is now preparing for a major expansion of its energy infrastructure to support future growth.

New Housing Project Moves Forward

Surrey council has given preliminary approval to another high-density residential project in City Centre. The development will add 366 new homes and help meet growing housing demand in one of the city’s fastest-changing neighbourhoods.

The project will rise on consolidated properties along the 13800 block of 108 Avenue and the 13800 block of Cowan Road. Plans include two six-storey apartment buildings above two levels of underground parking.

Today, the site contains three detached homes and three duplexes. However, redevelopment activity continues to increase throughout the area as Surrey City Centre evolves into a more urban community.

Located between Whalley Road and 140 Street, the property sits within an area already seeing significant redevelopment. Several nearby projects are also moving through the approval process.

City planners support the proposal because it aligns with Surrey’s Official Community Plan and the City Centre Plan. In addition, staff say the development will add much-needed housing while creating a more walkable neighbourhood.

City Centre Growth Creates New Energy Challenges

As more residents move into Surrey City Centre, demand for reliable and sustainable energy continues to climb.

To prepare for that growth, Surrey has launched a search for expert consultants to update the District Energy Strategy for Surrey City Energy (SCE), the city’s municipally owned utility.

SCE operates Surrey’s District Energy System, a centralized network that supplies heating to multiple buildings through connected infrastructure. Instead of each building producing its own heat, energy flows through a shared system designed to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

District Energy Network Continues to Expand

Since launching in 2013, Surrey’s District Energy System has expanded steadily across City Centre.

Today, the network serves 50 buildings covering more than 1.13 million square metres of floor space. By 2030, that number is expected to grow to 70 buildings and nearly 1.8 million square metres.

The system plays a key role in Surrey’s environmental goals by delivering low-carbon heating solutions to homes, businesses, and future developments.

At the same time, Surrey is updating its City Centre Plan. The revised plan includes expanded boundaries, higher residential densities, and an emerging Entertainment District. New provincial housing requirements have also encouraged additional growth opportunities.

Because of these changes, energy demand is expected to rise faster than earlier forecasts predicted.

SkyTrain Hubs Drive Future Development

Much of Surrey’s future growth centres around transit-oriented communities near SkyTrain stations.

The District Energy System now focuses on areas surrounding Gateway, Surrey Central, and King George stations. These locations continue to attract new residential and mixed-use developments due to their strong transit connections.

As density increases around these transportation hubs, demand for heating services will grow alongside it.

Energy Infrastructure Receives Major Upgrades

Surrey has already invested heavily in expanding its energy network.

In the early years, temporary energy centres and satellite boiler plants helped meet demand across the large 550-hectare City Centre area.

A major milestone arrived in 2018 with the completion of the West Village Energy Centre. The facility delivers 15 megawatts of capacity through three five-megawatt boilers and serves the rapidly growing Surrey Central district.

Further improvements followed in 2021 when new distribution piping connected the Surrey Central and King George service areas.

Additional boiler upgrades completed in 2024 boosted capacity even further. Another expansion planned for 2026 will raise peak capacity to 45 megawatts.

Demand Could Exceed 200 Megawatts by 2050

Looking ahead, Surrey expects energy needs to increase dramatically.

Based on growth forecasts, Surrey City Energy could be required to provide more than 200 megawatts of heating capacity by 2050. That projection reflects the city’s ambitious development plans and the continuing expansion of City Centre.

As thousands of new residents move into the area over the coming decades, energy infrastructure will become just as important as housing construction.

For Surrey, building more homes and expanding clean energy systems now appear to be moving forward together.
