Hundreds of teens gathered at a Vancouver Scientology building after a viral “speedrunning” trend led to chaos, police response, and one arrest.
Viral TikTok Trend Turns Into Downtown Vancouver Chaos
It started online. However, it quickly spilled into real life. Moreover, it turned chaotic in downtown Vancouver on Saturday afternoon. As a result, hundreds of mostly teens gathered outside the Church of Scientology building on West Hastings Street.
Meanwhile, what looked like a social media stunt quickly escalated. In fact, police say the crowd grew to between 250 and 300 people. Therefore, officers rushed to the scene around 3 p.m.
What Is “Scientology Speedrunning”?
The trend first gained traction on social media. Essentially, users film themselves trying to “speedrun” through Scientology-related buildings or spaces. In other words, they attempt to complete the stunt as quickly as possible, similar to video game speedruns.
Additionally, participants often try to gather information or map out buildings. However, the Vancouver event went further than typical online clips. Instead of harmless filming, the situation turned physical.
Police Say Entry Was Attempted
According to Vancouver police, some individuals tried to force entry into the building. For example, officers reported attempts to kick a back gate. Moreover, some people allegedly threw objects toward police.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, tensions remained high. Therefore, officers worked to disperse the crowd.
Crowd Returns, Teen Arrested
Even after the group was pushed back, the situation did not fully settle. Instead, the crowd returned around 5 p.m. Consequently, police made a temporary arrest of a 16-year-old boy.
Later, officers released the teen to his parents. Additionally, police confirmed no criminal charges are currently recommended. However, they warned that the actions could have led to serious consequences.
Police Warn About Real-World Consequences
Sgt. Adam Donaldson addressed the incident clearly. On one hand, he acknowledged that viral trends may seem fun. On the other hand, he stressed the legal risks.
“Breaking and entering, mischief, and assaulting police officers are serious offences,” he said. Moreover, he warned that charges could affect young people for life. Therefore, he urged caution when engaging in viral challenges.
Church of Scientology Responds
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Church of Scientology said the event was not peaceful. Instead, the group called it a coordinated disruption. Additionally, they said their buildings are meant to welcome lawful visitors only.
However, they also emphasized that trespassing and harassment are not acceptable. Therefore, they condemned the stunt as disruptive and unlawful.
Legal Experts Raise Concerns
Furthermore, Vancouver criminal lawyer Kyla Lee explained the legal risks in simple terms. For instance, participants could face trespass notices or even lawsuits. In addition, criminal charges could apply if property interference occurs.
She also highlighted an important point. Even though participants may see it as a joke, the law does not. Therefore, she warned that religious sites still have legal protections.
