Durham police investigate a targeted Ajax home attack that left one man dead. Suspects fled the scene; witnesses urged to come forward.

Deadly Overnight Incident Shocks Ajax Neighbourhood

A quiet Ajax street turned into a crime scene early Tuesday morning. Around 12:40 a.m., Durham Regional Police rushed to a home near Shorten Place and Haskell Avenue after reports of a possible break-in. However, what they found quickly shifted the direction of the investigation.

Inside the residence, officers discovered an adult man suffering from severe injuries. Despite emergency efforts, he was later pronounced dead at the scene. As a result, this marks Durham Region’s second homicide of 2026.

Suspects Flee Before Police Arrive

Meanwhile, witnesses reported seeing two individuals running from the property just before officers got there. Police immediately searched the area, deploying a K9 unit to track the suspects. However, despite these efforts, no arrests have been made so far.

Investigators continue to piece together what happened in those critical moments.

Not a Random Break-In, Say Investigators

Although the initial call suggested a break-in, police now believe the incident was targeted. In other words, this does not appear to be a random act of violence.

Importantly, officials have reassured residents that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. At the same time, they have not confirmed whether the victim lived at the home or was connected in another way.

What We Know  and What We Don’t

So far, police have ruled out domestic violence as a factor. However, key details remain unclear. For instance, the identities of both the victim and the suspects have not yet been released.

Authorities say more information will be shared once investigators confirm the facts.

Police Call for Witnesses and Video Footage

As the investigation moves forward, officers are canvassing the neighbourhood. They are especially interested in any surveillance or dashcam footage recorded between midnight and 2 a.m.

Therefore, anyone who may have seen or recorded suspicious activity is strongly encouraged to come forward. Tips can be shared directly with investigators or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Community Left Searching for Answers

For now, the Ajax community is left with questions  and concern. While police believe this was a targeted act, the search for suspects continues.

As more details emerge, residents hope answers will follow just as quickly.
