Growing Frustration Over Social Media Lockouts
Facebook and Instagram users across Canada are facing sudden account deletions, leaving many reeling with frustration and confusion. The Meta-owned platforms have permanently disabled accounts without explanation, with artificial intelligence systems rejecting all appeals. For many, this has meant losing years of personal memories, professional content, and community connections.
Stories of Shock and Loss
Albert Aziz described the experience as “emotionally exhausting,” after his Facebook account was disabled overnight. Despite submitting appeals, he only received automated denials. “This account represents years of friendships and creative expression,” he said. “Losing it with no recourse feels unjust.”
Denise Miller, a marketing professional in New Brunswick, saw both her personal and professional accounts erased. Meta’s system accused her of violating policies on child exploitation—allegations she says are baseless. After providing a video selfie to verify her identity, her accounts were still deleted. “It’s my information, my pictures, and I didn’t break the rules,” she said.
Business Owners Hit Hard
Photographer Chaydin Hodnefield also faced sudden account removal. Specializing in weddings and family portraits, she said the accusations against her were “shocking and unfounded.” Losing her accounts meant losing the primary platform for her business. “I think this is a push to make people pay for Meta verification,” she explained, after resorting to a paid verification badge for her new account.
Lack of Human Oversight
Many affected users blame Meta’s reliance on artificial intelligence moderators. The automated system leaves no space for human review, making it impossible to resolve errors. Miller called the system “junk,” criticizing the lack of accountability. “When you accuse someone of child exploitation, you need proof. And there is none,” she said.
Montreal resident Shon Pinto echoed those concerns. His 20-year-old Facebook archive disappeared without explanation. “No way to appeal, no way to talk to a real person,” he said. “It’s deeply frustrating.”
Mounting Pressure on Meta
As outrage grows, a petition demanding accountability from Meta has collected nearly 40,000 signatures. Users are asking the company to restore wrongly banned accounts, provide real customer support, and fix its flawed AI system.
Despite repeated media requests for clarification, Meta has yet to respond. The silence adds to the anger of users who feel abandoned by the very platforms they once trusted to preserve their digital lives.
