Michelle Plouffe Ends Playing Career, Builds Lasting 3×3 Legacy
Transition from player to leader
Canadian basketball star Michelle Plouffe, 32, has officially retired from competition and stepped into a new role as high performance director for Canada Basketball’s 3×3 program. The Edmonton native, who represented Canada in three Olympic Games, announced the move on August 21, 2025, marking the next chapter in a trailblazing career.
A career built on ambition
Plouffe’s journey with 3×3 basketball began in 2019, when she, her sister Katherine, and teammate Paige Crozon launched a program with one bold objective: qualify Canada for the Olympics. Despite funding challenges and covering their own travel costs, the team rose quickly to become one of the best in the world.
Major milestones achieved
During her playing career, Plouffe led Canada to multiple FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series titles, a silver medal at the 2022 World Cup, and a fourth-place finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics. While the team fell just short of a medal in Paris, Plouffe’s influence in establishing Canada as a global 3×3 contender remains unmatched.
Why the timing felt right
In announcing her decision, Plouffe said she was “ready to close a chapter” both mentally and physically. She emphasized that her passion for the sport made the move into coaching and program leadership a natural step. “It kind of seemed like God’s timing,” she said.
Continuing to shape the game
Plouffe now aims to expand the profile of 3×3 basketball across Canada, helping the next generation of athletes succeed at the international level. Her leadership will also support both the women’s and men’s programs as Canada targets its first Olympic podium finish in the format.
A legacy beyond medals
Though she never captured Olympic gold, Plouffe leaves behind a legacy that may prove even greater: she helped build an Olympic-calibre program from the ground up. Her contributions laid the foundation for future Canadian teams, ensuring her influence will be felt long after her playing days.
