Vancouver Giants give up 5 power play goals in a 9-4 loss to Victoria Royals, struggling to keep pace despite late efforts.

Giants Fall to Royals in High-Scoring Clash

The Vancouver Giants struggled to contain the Victoria Royals, surrendering five power play goals in a 9-4 defeat on Saturday night at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

The game was tightly contested early on, with the score tied 3-3 in the second period. But the Royals quickly pulled away, scoring three consecutive goals to take a 6-3 lead into the third.

Giants Fight Back, but Royals Dominate

Vancouver made a push early in the third period, narrowing the gap to 6-4. However, Victoria responded with a dominant run of three unanswered goals, sealing the outcome.

For the Giants, Ty Halaburda stood out, scoring twice on the power play. Ethan Mittelsteadt and Tyus Sparks also found the back of the net, keeping Vancouver competitive for stretches.

Meanwhile, Victoria’s Roan Woodward led the charge with four goals, while five other Royals—Miles Cooper, Caleb Matthews, Ashton Brown, Ludovic Perreault, and Timofei Runtso—added single goals each.

Game Highlights

  • Mittelsteadt wasted no time, scoring less than a minute into the game off a wrist shot from the left point.

  • Victoria responded quickly: Cooper tied the game, and Matthews scored on the power play to take a 2-1 lead.

  • Halaburda evened the score 2-2 with a power play goal late in the first, only for Woodward to restore Victoria’s lead before the period ended.

  • Sparks opened the second period with a goal, giving Vancouver forward momentum in consecutive games.

  • Woodward’s continued dominance, along with goals from Perreault and Brown, extended Victoria’s lead to 6-3 by the second intermission.

  • Halaburda’s second power play goal in the third narrowed it temporarily to 6-4, but Victoria’s relentless attack, including Woodward’s hat-trick and Runtso’s first career goal, finished the scoring at 9-4.

Giants Look Ahead

Vancouver will aim to bounce back on the road against the Swift Current Broncos on Friday, Oct. 3. Fans will have to wait until Friday, Oct. 17 for the next home game at Langley Events Centre when the Giants host the Red Deer Wild at 7 p.m.
