Bigger Support for Canadian Families in 2025

Starting July 2025, Canadian families will see a boost in their Canada Child Benefit payments. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) confirmed that these payments are going up to reflect inflation, helping parents better manage rising living costs. This annual increase ensures that families receive steady and predictable support, even as prices change.

What’s Changing in the Child Benefit Amounts?

The latest update brings good news for families with children of all ages. The maximum CCB payment for children under six increases by $210, taking the total to $7,997 per year. For children aged six to 17, the benefit rises by $178, now totaling $6,748 annually.

To qualify for the maximum amount, your adjusted family net income must be less than $37,487. If your income is above that, the payments gradually reduce, but many families will still benefit from this increase.

Why the Increase? Inflation Indexing Explained

The CRA adjusts CCB payments every July, using Consumer Price Index data reported by Statistics Canada. This process, known as indexing, ensures the benefit keeps up with the cost of living. A CRA spokesperson noted that this approach gives families “certainty and predictability of support” in times of economic change.

In simple terms, the government updates the CCB to make sure your benefits stretch as far as they did last year—even when things get more expensive.

How Are the New Payments Calculated?

Each July, the CRA recalculates your CCB based on:

  • The number of eligible children in your care

  • Their ages

  • Your adjusted family net income reported in the previous tax year

For parents with shared custody, each parent receives half of the benefit they would have received with full custody. This ensures fairness and consistency across different family structures.

The CRA also clarified that individuals who are primarily responsible for a child’s care are eligible to apply for the CCB. This includes parents, guardians, and others who provide daily nurturing and support.

A Look Back: CCB Growth Over the Years

CCB payments have steadily increased since July 2022, and the 2025 jump is part of this ongoing trend. For context, in the previous benefit year (July 2024–June 2025), the maximum amounts were $7,787 for children under six and $6,570 for older children.

With inflation continuing to affect everyday costs—from groceries to housing—this year’s increase is a welcome relief for families across the country.
