Protein Coffee: The New Buzz in Your Cup

Move over, plain lattes! Protein coffee—affectionately called “proffee”—is taking over cafes, and big names like Tim Hortons and Starbucks are jumping on board. If you’re looking for a morning boost that goes beyond caffeine, this trend is about to make your coffee break way more exciting.

Tim Hortons Kicks Off the Proffee Wave

Earlier this year, Tim Hortons made a bold move: launching a new line of high-protein dairy drinks. Their medium-sized protein latte packs a whopping 20 grams of protein—about as much as a small chicken breast! Suddenly, grabbing your daily coffee could double as a protein shake. The chain’s move signals a shift toward drinks that fuel your body while waking you up.

Starbucks Steps In with Protein Power

Not to be outdone, Starbucks is now testing protein coffee in select U.S. stores. At a recent leadership conference in Las Vegas, Starbucks revealed its plans to add protein-packed options to the menu. One standout is a banana-flavored cold foam with 15 grams of protein—equivalent to two extra-large eggs. NBC News also reported a protein vanilla latte rolling out in some locations.

Starbucks is no stranger to innovation. Alongside protein coffee, the company is experimenting with in-store baked croissants and a limited-edition Strato Frappuccino. CEO Brian Niccol told Axios, “It’s time for us to lead again,” emphasizing the company’s push to stay relevant and exciting in a competitive market.

Why Protein Coffee? The Science Behind the Trend

Protein coffee isn’t just a fad—it’s part of a bigger protein craze. While most people in countries like Canada already get enough protein, adding it to coffee is especially appealing for those on weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, who need extra protein to maintain muscle.

Starbucks is targeting a wide range of customers, from young adults to middle-aged women and those on GLP-1 medications. CEO Niccol noticed customers adding their own protein powder to drinks and realized Starbucks could offer a better, more convenient solution.

What’s Next for Protein Coffee?

Starbucks hints at more functional beverages on the horizon, possibly including mushroom-infused brews. The official launch date for protein coffee drinks is still under wraps, but Niccol says it’s “months away, not years.”

The Bottom Line: Coffee Gets a Protein Makeover

Protein coffee is here to stay, and it’s changing the way we think about our morning cup. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a busy professional, or just looking for a tasty twist, Tim Hortons and Starbucks are making it easier than ever to get your protein fix with your caffeine. Keep an eye out—your next favorite drink might just be a proffee!
