Etobicoke Dentist Killed in India Plane Crash
A Toronto-based dentist has been identified among the 241 victims of a deadly Air India crash that occurred shortly after takeoff in northwestern India on Thursday.
Victim Identified as Canadian Citizen Dr. Nirali Patel
Dr. Nirali Patel, 32, was the only Canadian national on board the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner when it crashed into a college hostel minutes after leaving the runway. Originally from Etobicoke, Patel was returning from a brief personal visit to India.
Community Mourns as Family Prepares to Travel
Patel’s husband is currently arranging travel to India with their one-year-old child. A family friend, Don Patel, shared that the family in Brampton is devastated. “There are no words. The entire community is in shock,” he said. Dr. Patel’s parents and brother live in the Greater Toronto Area and are reportedly en route to support recovery efforts.
Professional Background and Local Ties
Patel earned her dental degree in India in 2016 and received her Canadian license in 2019. She practiced at a Mississauga clinic and was well-regarded among patients and colleagues. The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario confirmed her standing in the profession.
Officials Respond to National Tragedy
Premier Doug Ford issued condolences on X, expressing sympathy on behalf of Ontario. Prime Minister Mark Carney also responded, stating he was “devastated” and confirmed that Canadian transport authorities are in direct contact with Indian officials.
Cause of Crash Under Investigation
India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported that the aircraft sent a mayday call shortly before losing contact. The extent of ground casualties remains unconfirmed. The crash marks the first known fatal incident involving the Boeing 787 Dreamliner model, according to the Aviation Safety Network.
Support Grows for Bereaved Family
Friends, community leaders, and local organizations are stepping in to support Patel’s grieving family. “We may not be able to take away their pain, but we will stand by them,” said Don Patel. Emotional and logistical assistance is being coordinated as the investigation continues abroad.
