Bear Attack Near Vancouver: Woman Fights Back With Garden Hose

Unexpected Encounter in Anmore

A woman in the village of Anmore, just outside Vancouver, faced a terrifying ordeal on Tuesday when a black bear confronted her near her home. The incident occurred shortly before noon as the woman was walking outside. Despite her efforts to scare the bear away, it continued to advance and bit her.

Quick Thinking Leads to Escape

With the bear refusing to back down, the woman managed to fend it off by grabbing a garden hose and spraying the animal. This quick action allowed her to escape and seek help. She was treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Conservation Officers Respond

Provincial conservation officers arrived on the scene but were unable to locate the bear. As a precaution, a bear trap has been set in the area, and officers continue to investigate the incident.

Recent Spike in Bear Encounters

This marks the second black bear attack reported in the region in the past month. In late April, a woman in Whistler was also bitten by a bear while walking her dog. That bear was later euthanized by authorities due to public safety concerns.

Safety Reminders for Residents

Wildlife officials are urging residents to stay alert, keep pets on leashes, and familiarize themselves with safety measures for wildlife encounters. Recent bear activity has also led to the temporary closure of local parks and beaches in Anmore, with food bans in place to reduce attractants.

“People are encouraged to familiarize themselves with safety precautions in case of wildlife encounters, which include being aware of surroundings and leashing pets,” the Conservation Officer Service stated.
