Canada is in talks to join the U.S. Golden Dome missile defense program, enhancing continental security and strengthening NORAD collaboration.

Canada is currently engaged in discussions to become part of the United States’ new “Golden Dome” missile defense initiative. A spokesperson from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed these talks, highlighting a broader effort to deepen security and economic ties between the two nations.

Prime Minister’s Mandate Drives Security Collaboration

The PMO emphasized that Canadians have given Prime Minister Mark Carney a strong mandate to negotiate comprehensive security partnerships with the U.S. Carney, along with his cabinet, is actively engaged in wide-ranging conversations with American officials. Among these talks, strengthening the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and initiatives like the Golden Dome feature prominently.

U.S. President Trump Advocates Canadian Participation

U.S. President Donald Trump recently introduced key details of the Golden Dome program, describing it as a continental missile shield capable of intercepting threats from across the globe and space. Trump noted that Canada has expressed interest in joining the system, underscoring the importance of protecting North America collectively.

Golden Dome’s Ambitious Scope and Price Tag

The multilayered Golden Dome system is projected to cost $175 billion and aims to be operational by the end of Trump’s term in 2029. Discussions between the U.S. and Canada also involve negotiations over cost-sharing, with Trump stating Canada will be expected to pay its fair share. However, the Canadian government has not disclosed how much it might contribute.

Canada’s Defence Investments and NORAD Modernization

In parallel with these talks, Canada recently announced a $6-billion investment in a new early warning radar system, developed in partnership with Australia. This project is part of a larger $18 billion defense spending plan that aims to modernize NORAD and enhance national security, keeping Canada on track to exceed NATO defense spending targets by 2030.

Building on the Iron Dome Legacy

The Golden Dome program draws inspiration from Israel’s successful Iron Dome defense system, designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery. Introduced as a 2024 campaign promise by President Trump, the Golden Dome is expected to provide a robust shield against emerging missile threats to North America.
