Thousands were affected by a partial ChatGPT outage on Tuesday. OpenAI is investigating the disruption and working to restore access across all tools.

AI Tools Hit by Global Outage Tuesday

On Tuesday, June 11, OpenAI’s ChatGPT experienced a partial outage, disrupting services for thousands of users worldwide. The issue affected the chatbot’s core functionality, its developer tools, and the Sora video generator. Reports began flooding in after 5:30 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.

Performance Issues Spark Widespread Reports

OpenAI first acknowledged the technical problems at 2:36 a.m. ET. Downdetector, which tracks outages across major services, recorded nearly 2,000 reports at the peak of the disruption. Users encountered elevated error rates, slower response times, and difficulty accessing services.

Company Investigating, Recovery Underway

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI stated that it had “identified the root cause” and was “working as fast as possible to fix the issue.” By mid-morning, the company reported partial recovery in both developer tools and ChatGPT, though it warned that full restoration could take several hours.

ChatGPT’s Growing Role Highlights Impact

The outage highlights ChatGPT’s expanding role in both personal and professional settings. Glassdoor reports usage of ChatGPT in workplaces has doubled over the past year. Meanwhile, Pew Research reveals 26% of U.S. teens now use the tool for schoolwork, up from 13% in 2023.

User Frustration Spills Onto Social Media

With many relying on ChatGPT for daily tasks, social media reactions ranged from humorous to frustrated. One user wrote, “ChatGPT is down… Which means I actually have to type out my own emails at work. Send prayers.”

Broader Trend of Digital Service Outages

The incident adds to a growing list of high-profile tech outages in 2025. Platforms like Zoom and X have also suffered significant service disruptions in recent months, raising questions about infrastructure resilience in the digital age.
