Canadian Victim Identified as Mississauga-Based Ontario Dentist

An Ontario dentist from Mississauga has been confirmed among the 240 people killed in the Air India crash that shook Ahmedabad on Thursday. Nirali Sureshkumar Patel, a Canadian citizen, was on board the London-bound flight when it went down just five minutes after takeoff, crashing into a residential area near a medical college hostel.

Her husband confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating she had boarded the flight alone while he remained in Canada with their one-year-old child. Patel’s dental clinic later redirected media queries to him, where he emotionally said, “That was my wife,” requesting privacy.

One of 240 Victims in India’s Worst Aviation Disaster in Decades

The crash claimed at least 240 lives, making it India’s deadliest aviation tragedy in decades. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying passengers from multiple countries including 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian, lost control moments after takeoff and crashed into the hostel’s dining area.

Reports confirm five students were among the victims, with another 50 injured. Ahmedabad hospitals received over 180 bodies, while Indian authorities confirmed one survivor who is now recovering.

Tributes Pour In from Canada and Around the World

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed grief, confirming one Canadian was aboard and ensuring constant communication between transport officials and international counterparts.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also extended condolences to all grieving families, especially those in Ontario. In a heartfelt message, he said, “Our thoughts are with every family enduring this unimaginable loss.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the crash “heartbreaking beyond words,” while King Charles and Queen Camilla released a statement expressing their “deepest sympathy” to all affected.

A Life Devoted to Care, Community, and Compassion

Dr. Nirali Patel was not just a dentist; she was a passionate volunteer and a believer in service. According to her biography on the Heritage Dental Centre website, she regularly participated in free dental camps and loved making a difference in people’s lives.

Her quote, “The feeling that my work has made a difference in someone’s life brightens my day,” now resonates deeply with those she cared for.

Her building manager, Victor Campagn, recalled, “She was always smiling. I’ve never seen her upset. She had a heart of gold.”

Patel, who studied dentistry in India before moving to Canada, had two young children and a thriving practice in Mississauga.

A Boeing 787 Tragedy Raises Global Concerns

The aircraft involved—a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner—is widely used by major airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet. While Air India owns several of the same model, this crash marks the first-ever fatal incident involving a 787-8, raising safety concerns across global aviation.

Footage from the scene showed flaming wreckage atop the hostel, with emergency responders rushing to pull survivors from rubble. Eyewitnesses described chaos, smoke, and a “loud thunder” before the crash.

As investigators search for answers, families across Canada, India, and Europe continue to mourn.
