Environment Canada issues a week-long heat warning for Edmonton and most of Alberta, urging residents to take precautions against rising health risks.
Heat Alert for Edmonton Residents
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a heat warning for Edmonton and surrounding areas, cautioning residents about unusually high temperatures expected to persist through the week.
Extended Hot Spell Across Alberta
The advisory, released Sunday, highlights that daytime highs in Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park will hover near 30°C, with overnight lows between 12°C and 16°C. The heat wave is forecast to last until next weekend, with no significant cooling trend expected in the short term.
Broader Impact on the Province
Alongside the warning for Edmonton, ECCC issued special weather statements covering nearly all of Alberta, including Calgary. Temperatures across the province are projected to reach 29°C to 33°C during the day and drop only slightly at night, ranging from 9°C to 13°C.
Health and Safety Concerns
According to ECCC, prolonged exposure to high heat raises the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Vulnerable groups, including children, seniors, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are at heightened risk during extended hot spells.
Public Advisory from Officials
Authorities are urging residents to stay cool and hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and check on neighbours who may be vulnerable. Officials also stressed the importance of never leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles, even for a short time.
Duration of the Heat Wave
The current weather models suggest that temperatures will remain elevated across much of Alberta for five to seven consecutive days. Relief is expected only toward next weekend, when cooler conditions are forecast to return.
