A celebration of Balagtasan and Filipino culture will light up Surrey on August 29, promising an evening filled with tradition and artistry. The University of the Philippines Alumni Association in British Columbia (UPAABC) is inviting the community to Praise International Church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for an unforgettable cultural showcase.

What to Expect at the Event

Guests will experience a vibrant program featuring soulful Kundiman songs, romantic Harana serenades, poetic spoken word, lively Sayawan dances, and the art of Balagtasan itself. This Filipino tradition, rooted in poetic debate, combines wit, eloquence, and cultural insight, offering audiences both entertainment and reflection.

Voices From the Community

Rhona Nieto Doria, a member of the UPAABC board, explained the cultural depth of the event: “Balagtasan is more than a performance—it is a dialogue that sharpens critical thinking while celebrating heritage. Through this art, we hope to inspire unity and pride in our community.” Performers from the Filipino-Canadian community will bring forward timely themes, blending music, dance, and debate into a rich cultural experience.

Free Tickets and Registration Details

Admission is free, but tickets must be reserved through Eventbrite under “Balagtasan 2025.” Registration closes on August 27. Organizers encourage early booking to secure seats for this celebration of culture, art, and community spirit.

Partners Supporting the Event

The gathering is presented by UPAABC in partnership with the United Way BC Kapwa Strong Fund, highlighting the ongoing commitment to strengthening Filipino identity and cultural expression in British Columbia.
