Ontario’s top doctor calls for a digital vaccine registry and national schedule to curb preventable diseases as measles resurges in Canada.

Push for a Unified Approach

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, is calling for the modernization of the province’s vaccine registry and the creation of a national immunization schedule. His annual report to the legislature warns that the fragmented system across provinces has left gaps in vaccine coverage, contributing to the recent resurgence of measles.

Gaps in Current Systems

Each province and territory maintains its own immunization records, a patchwork approach that Moore says has led to confusion for parents and blind spots for public health officials. While provinces such as British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba and Nova Scotia have modernized their registries, Ontario remains behind, relying on three separate systems for schools, COVID-19 records, and billing data.

Growing Vaccine Hesitancy

Moore’s report highlights a troubling rise in vaccine skepticism. Surveys show parental doubt about routine immunizations doubled between 2019 and 2024, while childhood vaccination rates fell after the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health experts warn that without centralized data, it is harder to track effectiveness and safety — leaving Canadians vulnerable to outbreaks of once-controlled diseases.

Challenges for Families and Health Officials

Parents are often forced to act as record keepers, submitting vaccination forms to schools, which then pass them to local health units. Toronto’s associate medical officer of health, Dr. Vinita Dubey, described the process as “very manual” and outdated, with systems that cannot communicate with one another. This inefficiency has delayed responses to coverage gaps and outbreaks.

Federal Coordination Efforts

The Public Health Agency of Canada is working with provinces and territories to link existing registries. As of October 2024, six jurisdictions — Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Yukon — had submitted vaccine data to the federal system. Ontario is in the process of integrating its records and developing a digital identity tool to allow patients easier access to their health information.

Economic and Public Health Benefits

Moore emphasized that a national vaccine schedule would not only strengthen disease prevention but also reduce costs through bulk purchasing and avoid duplication of doses. Centralized systems could also prevent unnecessary hospitalizations, easing the burden on Canada’s health-care system.

Updated COVID Vaccine: A Crucial Shield for Seniors

The updated COVID vaccine and its rollout in Canada are making headlines once again. Infectious disease experts emphasize that this fall’s updated dose is especially important for seniors and high-risk groups. As COVID continues to circulate, doctors warn that the illness still carries real risks, despite many people moving on from pandemic concerns.

“COVID can still be a very serious illness,” explained infectious disease specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch. He highlighted that while some have placed the virus in the “rear-view mirror,” seniors and immunocompromised individuals remain highly vulnerable.

What’s New About the Updated Vaccine?

Health Canada has authorized updated mRNA vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna for everyone six months and older. Both vaccines directly target the LP.8.1 variant, a descendant of Omicron that global health authorities tracked earlier this year.

Moderna also confirmed that its Canadian doses will be produced in Laval, Quebec, with syringes filled in Cambridge, Ontario. This signals a stronger domestic role in vaccine manufacturing, ensuring smoother access for Canadians.

Why Annual Shots Are the New Normal

Dr. Bogoch compared this shift to the flu vaccine strategy, where updated doses are designed each year to match circulating strains.

“We’ve seen the composition of these vaccines evolve as the virus continues to evolve,” he explained. “This fall’s version should better match the strains spreading in Canada.”

The move shows how public health officials are preparing Canadians for an annual rhythm of vaccination rather than the emergency approach of the early pandemic years.

Who Needs the Vaccine Most?

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has set clear guidance for different groups:

Two doses per year: Adults 80 and older, long-term care residents, and those six months or older with severe immune conditions.

One dose per year: Adults aged 65 to 79, health-care workers, and those at increased risk of severe illness.

Distribution plans will be determined by each province and territory, and eligible groups will receive doses free of charge.

Why Seniors and High-Risk Canadians Should Not Skip

While many Canadians may wonder whether they need another dose, Bogoch pointed to clear evidence.

“We can see who is overwhelmingly getting hospitalized and who is dying from this infection,” he said. “It really is people over 65, and especially those over 80.”

The data reveal that seniors and immunocompromised individuals face the highest risks from COVID. That makes the updated vaccine not just a recommendation, but a lifeline.

COVID may not dominate headlines the way it once did, but experts stress the importance of vigilance. With updated vaccines available and domestic manufacturing ramping up, Canada is better positioned to protect its most vulnerable populations.

As Dr. Bogoch noted, treating COVID more like seasonal flu with annual doses may be the best way forward.

Stay tuned to Maple Wire for the next big update in Canadian health news.

The post COVID Vaccine Update: Why Seniors Need It Most This Fall first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Canada accelerates audit of vaccine injury program amid rising criticism of mismanagement, delays, and high administrative costs impacting injured claimants.

Federal Health Audit Fast-Tracked Amid Public Pressure

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has confirmed it is accelerating its audit of the Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP) following widespread criticism of its administration. The move comes after rising concerns about delays, ballooning administrative costs, and inadequate support for Canadians who suffered vaccine-related injuries during the COVID-19 rollout.

PHAC officials stated that the audit will also evaluate new models for delivering the program, aiming to ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used effectively and that injured Canadians receive timely support.

Minister Responds to Mounting Scrutiny

At a press briefing in Fredericton, Health Minister Mark Holland acknowledged the urgency, saying, “I am on it,” while declining to offer further comment. His office has directed PHAC to explore alternative delivery mechanisms for VISP. These could involve transferring management away from the current administrator, Ottawa-based consulting firm Oxaro Inc., or possibly reverting the program to federal oversight.

The previous timeline for the audit has not been disclosed, and the agency has not yet revealed a new deadline.

Complaints Trigger Oversight Shift

The decision to expedite the audit follows sustained criticism stemming from a five-month media investigation into VISP’s operations. The series exposed serious flaws in how Oxaro handled claims, with injured applicants reporting difficulties contacting case managers and long wait times for decisions.

PHAC’s initial projections estimated 40 valid claims per year. That figure was later revised to 400 annually—yet more than 3,300 claims have been filed since the program’s launch, with over 1,700 applicants still awaiting outcomes.

Funding Disparity Sparks Concern

Updated federal figures show that VISP has received $54.1 million in public funding since 2021. Of that, $36.3 million—two-thirds of the total—was spent on administration, while just $18.1 million reached Canadians suffering from serious vaccine-related injuries.

Critics, including opposition MPs and health advocacy groups, argue that this imbalance raises serious questions about the program’s effectiveness and equity. Some affected individuals have resorted to crowdfunding their medical expenses while awaiting claim decisions.

Inside the Administration Gap

Former staff members described a disorganized workplace culture that included office distractions like slushie machines and Netflix streaming—raising doubts about the seriousness with which the program was administered. Others emphasized that they had tried to meet the program’s objectives despite staffing shortages and rising workloads.

Internal documents obtained during the investigation revealed early miscalculations about the number of applications and highlighted poor planning between Oxaro and PHAC at the outset.

Program Reforms Under Consideration

While officials have not disclosed what “alternative delivery models” might involve, potential options include reassigning the program to a new contractor or bringing it fully under government control.

A spokesperson for Oxaro acknowledged the program’s underestimated demand, stating that applications surged to more than ten times the original forecast. They claimed processes and staffing were adjusted accordingly and stressed that the company’s invoices are reviewed by PHAC prior to any government payments.

Calls for Accountability Grow

The audit acceleration signals the government’s recognition of deep-rooted issues in VISP’s operation. With more than 1,700 Canadians still awaiting a decision, public scrutiny is mounting, and the future of the program remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the federal government is under pressure to ensure fairness, transparency, and support for those affected by vaccine injuries—without unnecessary bureaucratic roadblocks.

Health Minister Marjorie Michel pledges to improve Canada’s Vaccine Injury Support Program amid growing criticism over delays and rising administrative costs.

Federal Minister Responds to Mounting Concerns

Health Minister Marjorie Michel acknowledged mounting concerns over Canada’s Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP) on Monday, promising to “try to improve” its delivery of services. Speaking during a press conference in Moncton, N.B., Michel addressed the program’s shortcomings for the first time publicly following a months-long investigation and recent public criticism.

Program Under Fire for Delays and Mismanagement

Created in 2020 to compensate individuals seriously injured by vaccines, VISP has come under intense scrutiny for its slow response times and disproportionate administrative spending. The program, administered by Ottawa-based consulting firm Oxaro Inc., has paid out $18.1 million to claimants—but has spent over $36 million on administration, according to updated figures released last week.

Thousands Still Waiting for Decisions

Although originally expected to receive 40 to 400 valid claims annually, the program has been flooded with over 3,300 applications. More than 1,700 of those applicants are still awaiting decisions, raising concerns about the program’s capacity and efficiency. Some claimants have had to resort to online fundraising just to survive while waiting for support.

Critics Call for Parliamentary Investigation

The situation has triggered calls for a Commons committee investigation, with four Conservative MPs demanding accountability. A leading health foundation has also urged an overhaul, citing unacceptably slow processing and poor communication with applicants. Former VISP staff and several claimants allege the program was inadequately prepared and poorly managed from the outset.

Government Keeps Contract Options Open

When asked whether the federal government would renew Oxaro’s contract—set to expire next year—Michel did not rule out major changes. “Every option is on the table,” she said, adding that the current situation is “unacceptable” and that her department is closely monitoring the third-party provider.

Consulting Firm Defends Performance Amid Volume Surge

In response to criticism, Oxaro stated that it had significantly scaled up staffing and operations after applications surged to more than ten times original estimates. The firm said it continues to adapt procedures to manage the backlog while staying within budget guidelines, adding that all government payments are pre-approved through detailed monthly invoices.

Complexity of Claims Slows Compensation

Michel emphasized that while delays are concerning, many cases involve complex medical evaluations. “No, people shouldn’t wait if they really need services… but it’s more complex than this,” she said, suggesting that not all delays stem from mismanagement.

Calls for Transparency and Timely Justice Continue

As public trust in the program erodes, calls for transparency and reform grow louder. Advocates insist Canadians injured during the national vaccination campaign deserve timely and fair compensation—not a bureaucratic waiting game. Whether the government delivers on its promise to improve VISP remains to be seen in the months ahead.

Conservative MPs and health advocates urge reform of Canada’s Vaccine Injury Support Program, citing delays, poor support, and high admin costs.

MPs Push for Accountability

A group of four Conservative Members of Parliament is calling for an urgent investigation into Canada’s Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP), raising concerns over excessive administrative costs and inadequate support for Canadians who suffered serious vaccine-related injuries. The request, made in a letter addressed to the House of Commons Health Committee chair, highlights what the MPs describe as “blatant misuse of tax dollars.”

The MPs—Dan Mazier, Helena Konanz, Dr. Matt Strauss, and Burton Bailey—urge the committee to convene an emergency hearing. Their appeal comes after months of reports revealing widespread inefficiencies in VISP’s operations. Liberal MP Hedy Fry, chair of the committee, has not responded publicly to the request.

Program Origins and Growing Complaints

VISP was launched in 2020 during the pandemic to provide financial assistance to individuals seriously and permanently injured by vaccines. In 2021, the Public Health Agency of Canada outsourced its administration to a consulting firm, now known as Oxaro Inc. Since then, complaints from claimants have mounted, ranging from long delays to limited communication from case managers.

Initial forecasts estimated only 40 claims annually, but over 3,300 applications have been filed to date. More than half of those applicants are still awaiting decisions.

Spending Under Scrutiny

Recent updates show Oxaro has received $54.1 million in federal funding. Of that, $36.3 million has gone toward administration, while only $18.1 million has been paid to injured Canadians. Health Canada says it continues to assess VISP’s performance and effectiveness.

Oxaro defended its record in past statements, saying it had to scale up operations quickly in response to the unexpected volume of claims. However, internal documents and former employee testimonies raise concerns about inadequate planning and workplace culture.

Health Advocates Call for Overhaul

Darryl Bedford, president of the GBS-CIDP Foundation of Canada, says his organization has lost confidence in VISP. He’s calling for a full review and overhaul, citing slow processing times and a lack of clear communication with claimants.

Bedford said some patients developed serious neurological issues, like Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), after receiving COVID-19 vaccines—cases that require urgent financial and medical support.

Contracting Questions Emerge

Critics have also questioned the decision to award VISP’s administration to Oxaro, previously a consulting arm of Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton. Competing bidders, including well-established health benefits managers like Green Shield Canada, were passed over.

Oxaro’s prior experience included only a small-scale insurance claim project that ended due to the insurer’s insolvency. Despite this, a six-person federal panel unanimously awarded the contract to Oxaro.

Government Response and Next Steps

Health Canada confirmed that the five-year agreement with Oxaro is under review, and a compliance audit is underway. The agency says it is focused on identifying shortfalls and improving service delivery for those affected.

The future of VISP remains uncertain as pressure mounts for greater transparency, faster claim resolutions, and a more effective support system for vaccine-injured Canadians.

Vaccines—not cod liver oil or measles parties—are key to stopping the spread, says B.C.’s health official. Here’s why myths are fueling a dangerous trend.

Vaccines Lead the Fight Against Measles, Not Folk Remedies

Forget cod liver oil. Skip the “measles parties.” If there’s one message Dr. Martin Lavoie, B.C.’s deputy provincial health officer, wants to drive home, it’s this: vaccination is the only reliable way to prevent measles.

During a recent update, Dr. Lavoie outlined the year’s measles activity across British Columbia. So far, most infections have surfaced in the Northern Health region—with 73 cases—while smaller clusters were reported in Fraser Health (10), Interior Health (8), Vancouver Coastal (8), and Island Health (3).

As of July 8, just one case remained active, but 10 people were still in hospital—a sobering reminder of how serious this virus can be.

Why Measles Is Not Just a Mild Childhood Illness

Although some view measles as a “rite of passage” in childhood, the truth is far more serious. The virus spreads rapidly and can result in pneumonia, brain inflammation, and even death.

So why are fewer people getting vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)? According to Lavoie, it’s not due to lack of access, but rather a surge of misinformation and long-standing myths.

How One Discredited Study Sparked Years of Vaccine Fear

Much of the vaccine hesitancy today can be traced back to one pivotal moment in 1998. British doctor Andrew Wakefield falsely linked the MMR vaccine to autism in a now-retracted study. Despite being completely debunked, the myth still lingers.

“That single study did enormous damage,” said Lavoie. “Even today, some still believe vaccines cause a variety of conditions, including autism, which simply isn’t true.”

No, Vitamin K or Cod Liver Oil Won’t Save You

It doesn’t stop with autism myths. Some people now believe that vitamin supplements like vitamin K, cod liver oil, or vitamin A can prevent—or even cure—measles. “That’s just false,” said Lavoie. “They’re not treatments. They’re not preventative measures.”

And then there are so-called “measles parties”, where parents deliberately expose unvaccinated children to the virus. Lavoie warned strongly against this practice. “You’re exposing kids to a dangerous disease that can have lifelong consequences—or worse.”

Vaccination Gaps Put Communities at Risk

According to the latest provincial data, B.C.’s vaccine coverage is concerning:

67.8% of residents have received both doses of the MMR vaccine.

84% have received at least one dose.

Coverage is highest in Island Health (75.1% for both doses), while Northern Health trails behind at just 61.1%.

Unsurprisingly, Northern Health is also where the majority of measles cases have occurred.

The Bottom Line: Vaccines Work. Myths Don’t.

If there’s one takeaway from Dr. Lavoie’s update, it’s this: Vaccines are the safest, most effective way to prevent measles. Myths and misinformation not only confuse people—they can cost lives.

So if you haven’t yet received both doses, it’s time to roll up your sleeve. Science is clear. Prevention is simple. And your health is worth protecting.

The post Vaccines, Not Myths, Stop Measles: B.C.

Low childhood measles vaccination rates in the Maritimes fall short of herd immunity targets, raising concerns about outbreak risks in Atlantic Canada.

Atlantic Canada Faces Rising Risk from Low Measles Immunization

Public health experts are raising alarms after new data reveals that measles vaccination rates among children in the Maritimes remain below the threshold needed to prevent outbreaks. At least three of the four Atlantic provinces have confirmed their immunization rates fall short of the 95% target required to stop the spread of the highly contagious virus.

According to provincial data released this week, thousands of children across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island remain unprotected from measles—a disease that can cause severe complications, especially in young children and those with weakened immune systems.

Provinces Report Alarming Immunization Gaps

Nova Scotia’s Department of Health reported that approximately 23% of children in the province were not fully vaccinated against measles in 2024. Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick each reported around 10% of children remain without full immunization.

Newfoundland and Labrador has not released current measles immunization data despite multiple inquiries. These figures fall significantly short of the 95% coverage needed to achieve herd immunity, as defined by public health guidelines.

Why 95% Immunization Matters

Measles is one of the most contagious airborne viruses, capable of lingering in the air for hours after an infected person has left the room. To effectively stop its transmission, 95% of a population must be immunized, according to Janna Shapiro, a post-doctoral fellow in immunology at the University of Toronto.

“Anything less, and you’re leaving cracks for the virus to spread, especially among infants and immunocompromised individuals who can’t be vaccinated,” Shapiro said.

Risk of Measles Outbreaks in the Region

The concern is not just theoretical. Measles cases are rising globally, and Canada has already recorded several imported and community-transmitted infections in recent years. Public health experts warn that the Maritimes, with its below-target vaccination coverage, could be vulnerable to a rapid outbreak if even a single case is introduced.

Children who are not fully vaccinated—either missing one of the two recommended doses or entirely unvaccinated—are at greatest risk. In some communities, hesitancy, misinformation, and healthcare access barriers contribute to gaps in immunization.

Health Officials Urge Action

Provincial health departments are encouraging parents to check their children’s vaccination records and ensure they are up to date. Many provinces have begun outreach efforts, including reminder letters and public awareness campaigns, particularly as children prepare to return to school in the fall.

“The science is clear,” said one Nova Scotia health spokesperson. “Vaccination is safe, effective, and critical to keeping our communities protected from preventable diseases like measles.”

Public Response and Next Steps

While public health officials continue to emphasize the importance of routine childhood vaccinations, experts say more must be done to close the gap—including stronger data reporting, education, and equitable access to clinics across rural and underserved regions.

National immunization programs are also under review, as Canada’s federal and provincial health authorities assess strategies to improve vaccine uptake amid growing concerns about misinformation.

With U.S. federal support uncertain, states and nonprofits are moving quickly to safeguard access to vaccines and counter changes to national immunization policy.

States Take Lead as Federal Vaccine Policy Shifts

Amid growing uncertainty from Washington, states and health organizations across the U.S. are working urgently to preserve public access to vaccines following major changes to federal guidance.

National Standards Upended

In May, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed all 17 members of the CDC’s longstanding vaccine advisory panel, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), replacing them with eight new members—some of whom have publicly questioned vaccine safety. He also bypassed ACIP’s process to remove Covid-19 vaccine recommendations for healthy children and pregnant women. These moves have alarmed health experts and sparked state-level responses.

Regional Coalitions Rise

Nine Northeastern states have formed the Northeast Public Health Collaboration, a new regional alliance aimed at coordinating health policy in the absence of federal leadership. Their focus includes vaccine access, pandemic preparedness, lab services, and epidemiology. While organizers describe their work as early-stage, they acknowledge increased urgency following federal shakeups.

States Modify Vaccine Laws

States like Maine and Colorado are revising laws to preserve access. Maine has removed ACIP language from its vaccine statute and is building alternatives outside of the federal Vaccines for Children Program. Colorado passed a law allowing its health commissioner to retain coverage for preventive services—including vaccines—based on recommendations that existed before the federal overhaul.

Deepening Legal Impact Across the U.S.

The policy shifts could disrupt immunization access in schools, pharmacies, and hospitals. Multiple states—such as New Mexico, Missouri, and Alabama—tie school entry requirements to ACIP guidelines. Others, like Tennessee, mandate that vaccine education materials align with ACIP language. If federal recommendations change, state laws may become outdated or inoperative, raising serious public health concerns.

Nonprofits Step In to Fill the Gap

Beyond government action, nonprofits are stepping up. The Vaccine Integrity Project, led by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, is creating independent vaccine guidance and countering misinformation. Funded by philanthropist Christy Walton, the group includes former public health officials and aims to help states revise vaccine laws to reflect evolving scientific standards.

Public Health Leaders Urge Action

Health officials say the decentralized response is far from ideal but increasingly necessary. Lori Tremmel Freeman of the National Association of County and City Health Officials warned that loss of federal support would have uneven and potentially severe consequences. “These are programs that impact every community in this country… If they go away, it will affect the health of every American,” she said.

Looking Ahead

As states prepare for future outbreaks and shifting federal policies, they are working to ensure that science-based immunization access continues, even if federal standards fall behind. With bipartisan urgency and growing public concern, the patchwork of state and nonprofit efforts could become the new foundation for vaccine access in America.

U.S. Health Secretary RFK Jr. removes all 17 CDC vaccine advisers, sparking backlash from medical groups and raising fears of politicized health decisions.

Major Overhaul of CDC Vaccine Panel Sparks Controversy

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has dismissed all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the scientific body that guides the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccine use. The announcement, made Monday, has drawn strong criticism from leading medical and public health organizations.

Decision Tied to Conflict of Interest Claims

Kennedy, a prominent critic of vaccines before entering public office, justified the removals by citing what he called “entrenched conflicts of interest” among committee members. Writing in The Wall Street Journal, he argued that “a clean sweep is needed to re-establish public confidence in vaccine science.” The Biden administration had appointed the now-dismissed members.

Health Leaders Warn of Politicization

Medical leaders expressed alarm at the unprecedented shake-up. Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, labeled the move “a coup” and said it threatens the committee’s independence. Dr. Bruce A. Scott, president of the American Medical Association, warned that the action “undermines trust” and could contribute to falling vaccination rates nationwide.

Replacements and Meeting Timeline Unclear

Although Kennedy pledged to appoint new members and reconvene the panel in two weeks in Atlanta, he has yet to name any replacements. Critics, including Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, have expressed concern that future appointees may lack proper scientific credentials or impartiality. Cassidy said he would continue discussions with Kennedy to ensure qualified experts are selected.

Public Website Scrubbed, CDC in Limbo

Shortly after the announcement, the CDC removed the ACIP member roster from its website, fueling further speculation about the future direction of U.S. vaccine policy. The committee’s February meeting had already been abruptly postponed earlier this year, indicating turbulence since Kennedy’s confirmation.

Growing Uncertainty for Vaccine Policy Direction

The mass dismissal follows Kennedy’s controversial decision to alter federal COVID-19 vaccine recommendations without first consulting the ACIP. This move contradicted assurances he gave during his confirmation process, raising doubts about his commitment to maintaining established scientific review protocols.

National Health at Stake Amid Declining Trust

With U.S. vaccination rates slipping and preventable diseases resurging, experts fear Kennedy’s shake-up could destabilize one of the country’s most critical public health mechanisms. Advocacy groups have vowed to closely monitor his actions going forward, warning that the consequences of eroding scientific norms could be severe and far-reaching.

New data from 258 placebo trials directly challenge Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vaccine claims, reinforcing scientific consensus and public health facts.

Health Leader’s Statements Under Scrutiny

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now serving as U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, has repeatedly claimed that most vaccines recommended for children haven’t been tested against inert placebos in pre-licensing trials. Speaking before the Senate on May 14, he asserted that only COVID-19 vaccines had undergone such rigorous testing — a statement that alarmed medical professionals.

A Researcher Pushes Back

Dr. Jake Scott, an infectious disease specialist at Stanford University, took issue with Kennedy’s statements. Launching a crowdsourced research effort in April, Scott and a team of global volunteers combed through decades of clinical studies to verify the claim. In just five weeks, they identified 258 randomized, placebo-controlled vaccine trials, with over half involving inert placebos like saline or water.

The Evidence is Public

Scott published his findings in a publicly shared spreadsheet. Using strict inclusion criteria — human-only trials with randomization and placebo control — the team sourced studies from databases such as PubMed, the WHO, and CDC. In total, these trials represented more than 2.5 million participants, offering a robust body of evidence on vaccine safety.

Vaccines Proven Through Inert Placebo Testing

The findings revealed that at least 9 of the 16 vaccines routinely recommended for U.S. children by the CDC — including those for polio, HPV, rotavirus, and MMR — have been tested against inert placebos. One landmark example: the 1954 polio vaccine trial, which involved over 400,000 children and used saline injections as a control. The vaccine was approved the very day its successful results were announced in 1955.

Ethics and Science Behind Placebo Use

While Kennedy has long emphasized the importance of inert placebos, experts note that active placebos — which contain harmless elements like adjuvants — are often used ethically when withholding an effective vaccine would pose risk. In other cases, control groups receive older, approved vaccines instead of a true placebo to ensure safety.

Dr. Greg Poland from the Mayo Clinic explains that this method allows researchers to isolate vaccine effects while maintaining ethical standards. “You’re testing A plus B versus B — so you isolate A,” he said.

Kennedy’s Position Evolves

Although Kennedy once called for only inert placebo-controlled trials, recent Senate testimony shows he may be shifting. Citing a 2016 Cochrane study, he acknowledged that observational studies can offer comparable insight into vaccine safety — a notable softening of his stance.

HHS Mandates New Policy

Despite the growing evidence base, HHS announced it will require all new vaccines to undergo placebo-controlled trials before approval — a move it called a “radical departure” from past practice.
Expert Reaction

Dr. Isaac Bogoch of the University of Toronto, who reviewed Scott’s spreadsheet, called the data “impressive” and said it combats rising vaccine hesitancy with facts. “This type of work is extremely important in the era of misinformation,” he noted.

The Road Ahead

Scott and his team hope to publish their findings in a peer-reviewed journal. Meanwhile, their data remains accessible online — a transparent rebuttal to Kennedy’s statements and a testament to the power of crowdsourced science. “It’s frankly astounding that someone who made such easily disprovable claims is now heading HHS,” Scott said. “We compiled this evidence specifically to counter these false narratives with hard data.”
