P.E.I. Closes Schools as First Major Snowfall Slows Travel

Storm Disrupts Morning Routine Across the Island

Prince Edward Island’s first significant snowfall of the season forced all public schools to close Wednesday as deteriorating road conditions made early-morning travel difficult. Snow moved across the Island before sunrise, prompting officials to suspend classes and caution residents about reduced visibility and slippery surfaces.

Weather Alerts Lifted as Snow Begins to Ease

A snowfall warning for Kings County and special weather statements for Queens and Prince counties were in effect early in the day but were lifted by late morning as the system weakened. Although the heaviest snow tapered off, forecasters said road conditions would take time to improve after several hours of steady accumulation.

Health Services Delay Opening Due to Conditions

Several Health P.E.I. services delayed opening on Wednesday to ensure staff and patients could travel safely. Officials urged Islanders to check the Health P.E.I. website for updated schedules as crews continued clearing priority roads.

Post-Secondary Campuses Reopen in Stages

The University of Prince Edward Island announced a noon opening for all locations, while Holland College campuses resumed operations at 10:30 a.m. The staggered return allowed institutions to wait out the worst of the snowfall and ease pressure on morning traffic.

Government and Federal Offices Adjust Schedules

Provincial civil service offices in West Prince, eastern Prince County, Queens County and Charlottetown reopened as planned, while offices in Kings County delayed opening until noon. Service Canada centres in Summerside and Charlottetown opened for the day, with Montague and Souris offices scheduled to open at midday.

Child-Care Centres and Independent Schools Respond

Island Montessori Academy, with locations in Stratford and Cornwall, closed for the day as conditions worsened early Wednesday. The closure came alongside the province-wide shutdown of public schools as officials prioritized safety during the morning commute.

Ferry Crossings Cancelled as Marine Conditions Worsen

All Northumberland ferries between Caribou, N.S., and Wood Islands, P.E.I., were cancelled for Wednesday due to weather-related safety concerns. Operators cited reduced visibility and deteriorating marine conditions as key factors in the decision.

Cleanup Continues as Islanders Resume Routine

With snowfall easing by late morning, road crews continued clearing major routes and intersections across the Island. Authorities advised residents to allow extra time on the roads and remain cautious as plows work to widen lanes and remove lingering snow.

1,600 P.E.I. Patients Affected as Charlottetown Doctor Retires

Retirement Announcement

A Charlottetown family physician is preparing to retire on Dec. 19, leaving 1,600 Islanders without a primary care provider. Health P.E.I. confirmed that Dr. Stephen Zimmer, who currently practises at Sherwood Family Medical Centre, has notified patients of his departure after years of service in the province’s health system.

Impact on Local Patients

With no replacement physician currently assigned, Health P.E.I. says affected patients are being given instructions on how to register for the province’s patient registry, the system used to connect residents with available family doctors. The agency acknowledged the disruption and thanked Dr. Zimmer for his dedication, wishing him well in retirement.

Context Behind the Departure

Provincial officials previously noted that Dr. Zimmer, who is in his early 70s, moved to Canada from the United States in 2019. His retirement adds pressure to P.E.I.’s already strained primary care network, which has been contending with physician shortages and rapidly growing patient demand.

Provincial Health System Response

Health P.E.I. says it has hired 36 physicians so far this year, including six family doctors, in an effort to stabilize the system. The agency reports that 7,427 Islanders have been connected with a primary care provider between January and October — progress that officials say reflects ongoing recruitment efforts.

Broader Primary Care Challenges

Despite these gains, the province continues to face a significant backlog. According to the government’s website, over 35,000 Islanders remain on the patient registry waiting to be matched with a doctor or nurse practitioner. As Dr. Zimmer’s departure approaches, health officials say they will continue working to expand access and fill vacancies across the province’s primary care network.

Hockey P.E.I. reverses its 2025 girls’ tournament format after backlash, restoring equal game guarantees for the 2026 provincial championships.

Hockey P.E.I. Reinstates Round-Robin Format for 2026

Community Reaction Drives Change

After public criticism over last season’s tournament structure, Hockey P.E.I. has announced it will return to the traditional round-robin format for the 2026 provincial championships. The decision follows complaints from players and parents who said the new system gave girls’ A-division teams fewer opportunities to compete.

Unequal Play Sparked 2025 Controversy

The 2025 girls’ A-division championships introduced an elimination-style format that left some teams playing only one game. Meanwhile, boys’ teams at the same level played multiple matches under a round-robin system. The change quickly drew accusations of unfairness and gender inequity in provincial competition.

Decision Effective for 2026 Championships

Hockey P.E.I. confirmed that beginning with the 2026 tournament, all girls’ A-division teams will once again be guaranteed three games. The move restores the structure used in previous years, ensuring parity between male and female divisions at the same level of play.

Reasons Behind the Reversal

“It was clear the change in format was not well received,” said Tami Lewis, executive director of Hockey P.E.I., in an emailed statement. “This prompted the decision to return to the original round-robin format used in previous years.” The organization said the shift reflects its commitment to fairness and equal development opportunities.

How the Original Change Came About

The elimination format introduced in 2025 was proposed by Hockey P.E.I.’s female council, which aimed to host all female teams at one venue to celebrate women’s hockey. While that initiative received some support, the limited playtime led many associations to question whether it truly benefited the female game.

Next Steps for Female Hockey

Hockey P.E.I. said the idea of holding all female divisions in a single venue remains under review and could return depending on host interest. Elimination formats will continue for leagues that have traditionally used them, including major, AAA, girls’ AA, and U18 boys’ AA divisions.

Northumberland Ferry cancels nearly all Tuesday crossings between Caribou, N.S., and Wood Islands, P.E.I., amid high winds and mechanical issues.

Operational disruption hits busy route

On Tuesday, October 27, virtually all scheduled crossings between Caribou, Nova Scotia and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island via Northumberland Ferries Limited (NFL) were cancelled. The company cited high winds and ongoing mechanical issues with the vessel MV Northumberland as the key reasons.

Mechanical faults compound seasonal cut-back

NFL revealed that the MV Northumberland is struggling with two faulty thrusters. Repairs are underway, but they are relying on external experts to complete the work, according to General Manager Jeff Joyce. At the same time, the service is down to one ship for the shoulder season: the second vessel, MV Confederation, was taken out of service on October 17 and remains stuck in Nova Scotia due to the same windy conditions and logistical constraints.

When and where the cancellations are occurring

The cancellations applied to all departures scheduled for Tuesday between Caribou, NS and Wood Islands, PEI — a frequent link for travellers and freight. NFL had already cancelled crossings over the past weekend and early Monday morning. The company expressed that the combined wind and vessel faults made safe operation impossible.

Local voices express frustration and concern

PC MLA for Belfast-Murray River, Darlene Compton, told News she is hearing from constituents who now question whether they can trust the ferry service. She cited recent maintenance issues — such as oil change delays — that she feels raise reliability concerns. One Wood Islands resident, Trish Carter, had to detour via the mainland when her booked crossing was cancelled, returning home late with livestock still unattended. She said she’ll still ride next time, but “hopes they figure out what’s going on so it doesn’t happen to more travellers.”

Why the timing matters for the route

This disruption comes at a time when demand had increased: earlier in August the federal government cut ferry fares, which boosted traffic. NFL had pointed to the transfer to a one-ship service as standard for the shoulder season — but the combination of vessel fault and weather has stretched its capacity. The delays mean potential economic and personal inconvenience for Islanders and Nova Scotians relying on the service.

How the company and stakeholders plan to respond

NFL says the thruster issues are being addressed, but no firm timeline was offered for full resolution. Meanwhile, the arrival of a brand-new ferry initially slated for 2027, then delayed to 2028, has now been delayed again without a new date provided by Transport Canada. Local stakeholders say they’ll monitor service reliability closely and expect the company to communicate more transparently about maintenance and contingency plans.

Summerside urges action as P.E.I. faces growing energy strain, seeking power grid control to secure future electricity and renewable growth.

Summerside Seeks Greater Role in P.E.I.’s Power Future

Growing Energy Strain on the Island

Prince Edward Island’s energy system is facing mounting pressure as electricity demand surges across the province. Officials from the City of Summerside and the P.E.I. Energy Corporation met Thursday with MLAs to discuss how local utilities can help stabilize the grid and expand renewable generation.

Summerside’s Bid for More Control

Summerside Mayor Dan Kutcher told the standing committee that his city wants a greater hand in managing the province’s electricity supply. The city currently produces about 60 per cent of its power through solar and wind but depends on Maritime Electric’s transmission network for the rest. Kutcher warned that “time is ticking” as regional forecasts predict potential power shortages by 2028.

Infrastructure and Reliability Challenges

Last winter’s substation failure north of Summerside exposed vulnerabilities in the local grid. Growing electrification — including residents switching from oil heating to renewables — has only added strain. Summerside Electric’s senior utility engineer, Garrett Webster, said new diesel and cleaner backup generators are needed to ensure reliable supply.

Call for Legislative Change

Both Kutcher and Webster argued that legislative barriers are limiting local energy generation. They urged the province to allow Summerside direct access to New Brunswick’s submarine cables and to modernize energy laws so municipalities can generate and distribute more power independently.

Broader Provincial Concerns

P.E.I. Energy Corporation CEO Gordon MacFadyen told MLAs that the province’s peak electricity load climbed from 265 megawatts in 2015 to 359 in 2023 — a record high driven by population growth and cold-weather demand. He said the solution must combine renewable expansion with conventional backup sources to ensure stability.

Debate Over P.E.I.’s Energy Direction

Green MLA Peter Bevan-Baker questioned whether P.E.I.’s Renewable Energy Act should be updated to allow more community-based power generation, similar to Nova Scotia’s one-megawatt limit. MacFadyen agreed, saying, “We need to be 2.0 of what we have today.” Legislative reform is expected to be part of the province’s upcoming energy strategy.

P.E.I.’s Red Shores Casino profits drop 35% in 2024-25, but ALC says upgrades and strong visitor numbers signal a rebound ahead.

Island revenues shrink despite regional gains

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC), which owns Red Shores, reported total profits increasing by nearly CAD 12 million in the 2024-25 fiscal year. However, the share returned to Prince Edward Island dipped to CAD 25.9 million — almost CAD 1 million less than the previous year. Meanwhile, the other three Atlantic provinces saw increases in their lottery returns.

Casino profit declines drive the shortfall

Red Shores’ casino operations posted a profit of only CAD 2.5 million in 2024-25, marking a decline of approximately 35 % compared with the prior year. ALC president and CEO Dallas McCready described the year as “challenging,” attributing the drop to cost-of-living pressures and other economic headwinds.

Visitor numbers steady but spending down

McCready emphasised that while visitation figures remained “fairly consistent and strong”, the amount spent per visit has fallen — a trend mirrored across land-based casinos in other provinces. He also noted that large-scale expansion construction at Red Shores may have contributed to the weaker performance.

Live racing revenue holds up

In contrast to the casino games segment, live harness-racing operations at Red Shores maintained consistent revenue. Although fewer bets were placed on-site as more customers shifted to online wagering, McCready and industry stakeholders emphasised the importance of the racing arm to both the horse-community economy and employment on the Island.

Expansion underway for future gains

The casino and entertainment centre is undergoing a major renovation which includes new dining and entertainment offerings. ALC expects the upgrades to be completed in early 2026 — McCready projects that although the expansion may have weighed on last year’s results, the coming years should deliver stronger performance.

Provincial impact and outlook

Prince Edward Island’s Department of Finance had budgeted CAD 30.1 million in revenue from ALC for 2024-25. The weaker casino profits mean less money flowing into areas like health care and education. Nonetheless the province noted that other segments of ALC’s operation partially offset Red Shores’ decline and reaffirmed confidence that the renovations will yield a healthier venue for patrons.

Court Confession in Charlottetown

A Charlottetown man has admitted to sexually touching a teenage boy he was in an illegal relationship with, and to possessing hundreds of child sexual abuse images.
Dylan Kurt Macdonald, 30, entered guilty pleas in P.E.I. Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon. The plea marks the first public disclosure of details surrounding the case, which has been under investigation for more than a year. To protect the victim’s identity, the court has withheld specific dates and locations of the offences.

Online Upload Sparks Investigation

Macdonald’s criminal activity came to police attention after he attempted to upload child sexual abuse material through Adobe’s online photo software. The suspicious files were automatically flagged to the P.E.I. RCMP’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit, triggering a deeper probe.
Following a search warrant executed in February, police seized his electronic devices—phones, laptops, tablets, and external drives—containing “hundreds of images of adolescent males with exposed genitals.” Officers also discovered a locked box with printed photos, including a yearbook image of a local teen, who was later identified as the victim.

Relationship Began at Local Camp

Investigators determined that Macdonald first met the victim years earlier at Oak Acres Camp, where Macdonald was a counsellor and the youth a camper.
The two reconnected later and developed a friendship that eventually turned romantic. According to the agreed statement of facts, the victim—then 15 years old—initiated the relationship believing it was consensual. Macdonald claimed he believed the teen was 16, the legal age of consent in Canada. However, his failure to confirm the youth’s actual age rendered the sexual contact illegal.

Evidence of Sexual Acts

Court documents describe that the pair visited a motel during the period when the victim was still underage. Macdonald took photographs of the teen engaging in sexual acts.
He admitted in court that he did not take reasonable steps to verify the victim’s age before initiating sexual contact. While the relationship continued briefly after the teen turned 16, it has since ended.

Breach of Court Conditions

After his initial arrest, Macdonald was released on several conditions, including no contact with minors, no internet access, and no communication with the victim.
In June 2025, he violated those orders by sending an audio message to the victim and later contacting him by phone while attending an addictions program. Police later found Macdonald in a vehicle with another youth under 16, along with a cellphone, glass pipe, unidentified drug, and a collapsible baton, all of which breached his release terms.

Awaiting Sentencing and Psychological Review

Macdonald has served a 110-day sentence for the breaches and has remained in custody since June. On Tuesday, the court granted him temporary release to visit a dying family member, with strict conditions requiring him to return to custody next week.
The case will return to court in early 2026 to schedule sentencing. Both the Crown and defence have requested that Macdonald undergo a sexual deviancy assessment before the final decision is made.

Public Safety and Legal Implications

The case highlights the growing role of digital monitoring in uncovering child exploitation and reinforces the responsibility of law enforcement to protect minors online.
It also raises broader questions about how Canadian courts manage offenders who breach release terms and how early detection of flagged internet activity can prevent further harm.

Authorities assess three stranded sperm whales near East Bideford, P.E.I., urging public to stay 200m away as rescue efforts continue.

Stranded Sperm Whales Spotted Near East Bideford

Three large sperm whales were sighted Saturday night stranded on the ocean side of a small chain of islands near Hardys Channel, close to East Bideford, western Prince Edward Island. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Marine Animal Response Society confirmed the presence of the mammals and began monitoring their condition.

Uncommon Coastal Appearance

Sperm whales usually inhabit deeper waters in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, explained Tonya Wimmer, executive director of the Marine Animal Response Society. “Every now and then we’ll get a group or a single animal that comes closer to shore and accidentally ends up on the beach,” Wimmer said. While their presence in these waters is not unusual, sightings on shorelines are rare.

Size and Identification

Based on local migration patterns, the whales are likely all male, typically reaching lengths of up to 15 metres and weighing as much as 30 tonnes. Their massive size makes any rescue operation logistically complex and potentially dangerous for both the animals and humans involved.

Public Safety Precautions

DFO has emphasized the need for public safety, urging residents and visitors to maintain a distance of at least 200 metres from the whales. Wimmer added that stranded whales can be highly stressed and may move unpredictably, posing risks to anyone nearby.

Assessing Rescue Options

Authorities are currently determining whether the whales are alive and if a rescue is feasible. “With animals this big and this heavy, you cannot just simply put a rope around their tail and pull them out,” Wimmer said. “That actually can do serious, serious damage to the animal and is incredibly unsafe.” DFO continues to monitor the situation closely, coordinating with provincial teams to decide next steps.

Ongoing Monitoring and Updates

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will continue to observe the whales and provide updates as assessments progress. Officials are balancing the well-being of the animals with public safety concerns, highlighting the complexity of large marine mammal rescues along P.E.I.’s shores.

P.E.I. oyster industry at risk as disease crisis worsens

Islanders sound the alarm

Oyster fishers, growers, and processors filled a legislative standing committee meeting in Charlottetown on Thursday, warning MLAs that the sector is on the brink. Leaders described the situation as “dire” and said livelihoods across Prince Edward Island are at stake.

Threat from MSX and dermo

The crisis began in July 2024, when MSX was first detected in Bedeque Bay. A year later, dermo appeared in Egmont Bay. Neither affects human consumption, but both diseases are lethal to oysters. Mortality rates have reached up to 90 per cent in some areas, leaving harvesters with little product and no reliable income.

Pressure mounting on families

With sales collapsing, fishers say they cannot meet loan payments or provide for their families. “The majority of their product is dying,” said Martin O’Brien, president of the P.E.I. Oyster Processors Association. “Their banking institutions are saying their payments are due … it’s a pretty dire situation.”

Demands for immediate relief

Industry groups are calling for targeted programs, including hatcheries for disease-resistant seed, loan deferrals, wage subsidies, and risk management tools similar to those offered to agriculture. They are also asking for extended EI eligibility and support for processors holding oysters until markets recover.

Government weighs options

The province says $2.72 million has been approved through the Aquaculture Contingency Fund, with additional measures under discussion. “We remain committed to working closely with industry partners and the federal government to ensure support is targeted, timely, and effective,” the province said in a statement.

Uncertain path forward

Industry leaders say the next generation of oyster harvesters could be lost if action is delayed. “How does that look for my kids in the future?” O’Brien asked. With many Islanders having returned home to work in aquaculture, growers fear the crisis could drive families away again if the industry collapses.

New P.E.I. garden in St. Peter’s Bay will teach Islanders to grow food in hotter, drier conditions and improve community food security.

Garden to Teach Climate Adaptation

Prince Edward Island is introducing the Climate Resilient Demonstration Garden at the UPEI School of Climate Change and Adaptation in St. Peter’s Bay. The project is designed to help residents learn how to grow food in the face of rising temperatures and longer dry periods.

Funding and Community Access

The initiative is funded through the provincial Island Community Food Security Program. Once fully planted, the garden will be open to the public, giving Islanders a chance to see firsthand how climate-adapted crops and techniques can strengthen food security.

Crops Suited for Future Conditions

Project lead Krystal Pyke said the garden will feature varieties commonly grown in drier regions such as the Prairies and the Middle East. These trials will show how crops can withstand conditions expected in P.E.I.’s future climate.

Innovative Growing Methods

The site will highlight multiple planting approaches, including no-till beds, square-foot layouts, and “chaos gardening,” where diverse plants compete naturally. To combat dry summers, three irrigation systems will be tested, from drip lines to terracotta pots that slowly release water underground.

Supporting Pollinators and Ecosystems

Part of the lawn will be transformed into a pollinator-friendly space with native plants like clover and borage. Pyke said boosting pollinator activity will improve both crop yields and local biodiversity.

Community Involvement and Workshops

Although delayed from June, planting is now expected to begin in September with crops such as carrots, radishes, beets, kale, and garlic. Workshops will cover food preservation and seed-saving, while produce will be shared with participants and the wider St. Peter’s Bay community.

Addressing Food Access Challenges

With the nearest grocery store located in Morell, about 10 minutes away, many residents struggle to access fresh produce. The demonstration garden aims to ease those challenges while serving as a long-term education site for schools and families.
