A massive barn fire in East Ladner destroyed equipment and shook a farming family, while the community quickly rallied with support.

A devastating barn fire in East Ladner has left a long-time farming family and a local food truck business trying to recover after heavy losses.

Delta firefighters rushed to the property on 104th Street on May 21 after thick smoke could be seen rising into the sky. Although the blaze destroyed the barn and equipment, all livestock escaped safely before crews arrived.

Smoke Seen Across East Ladner

The fire broke out shortly after 3 p.m. at a property on 104th Street in East Ladner.

According to Acting Delta fire chief Dave Wood, firefighters saw a massive column of smoke while heading to the scene. Early reports also suggested animals could still be trapped inside the barn.

However, everyone managed to move the livestock to safety before firefighters arrived.

Crews then faced intense flames and heavy black smoke pouring from the structure. Because the fire had already spread through much of the barn, firefighters switched to a defensive attack. They used aerial equipment and elevated water streams to control the blaze.

In total, 24 firefighters and six fire apparatus responded to the scene. Meanwhile, Surrey Fire provided standby mutual aid support, and Delta police also attended.

Officials later confirmed the fire started because of human error.

Farming Family Faces Another Setback

For Don Malenstyn, the fire marked another painful chapter for a family that has farmed the land since 1943.

While cleanup efforts continue, he said the support from the farming community has helped his family move forward.

“The farming community really stands behind you,” Malenstyn said. “It’s been a busy few days.”

At the same time, he shared frustration over ongoing flooding and land management concerns tied to the property. He explained that he has spent decades raising issues connected to water control and disputes involving the Agricultural Land Commission.

According to Malenstyn, the timing of a recent call from the commission added even more stress during the emergency.

Despite the emotional toll, his main focus remained on protecting the animals and securing the property after the fire.

Porkmafia Business Hit by Equipment Loss

The blaze also damaged equipment belonging to Jamie Leighton, owner of the popular catering and food truck business Porkmafia.

Even so, Leighton said he feels grateful for the strong support from friends, customers and the wider community.

“I would like to let everyone know how much it has meant to me and my family,” he said.

He also praised the Malenstyn family for supporting both him and his business over the past seven years.

Community Support Grows After Fire

Although the fire caused major damage, the response from the local community has brought hope to everyone involved.

Friends, neighbours and fellow farmers have already stepped in to help with cleanup efforts and recovery plans.

Now, as the smoke clears in East Ladner, the families affected are focusing on rebuilding and moving ahead together.

The post East Ladner Barn Fire Leaves Farmers Rebuilding first appeared on Maple News Wire.
