Former CFL players from northern Ontario react to sweeping rule changes that will reshape Canadian football starting next season.

CFL Veterans Voice Concerns Over Major Rule Changes

Tradition Meets Transformation

Former Canadian Football League standouts Rocky DiPietro and Mike Derks are speaking out as the CFL prepares to introduce sweeping rule changes next season. The two northern Ontario natives, both Grey Cup champions with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, say the adjustments mark one of the most significant shifts in the league’s history.

New Season, New Dimensions

The CFL confirmed that its playing surface will undergo major modifications, including a field shortened by 10 yards and smaller end zones. Goal posts will also move to the back of the end zone, eliminating the long-standing risk of pass attempts colliding with the centre post—an incident DiPietro still remembers from the 1985 Grey Cup. The league says the changes align the Canadian game more closely with U.S. football standards and aim to create a faster, more streamlined experience for viewers.

Concerns Over Game Flow

A new 35-second play clock is also raising eyebrows among former players. DiPietro argues that tightening the time between snaps could reduce the dramatic late-game swings that have long defined the Canadian game. Known for its wide-open style and unpredictable finishes, the CFL has traditionally built excitement around its final three minutes—something DiPietro fears could diminish under the new timing rules.

Identity at Stake

Among the most contentious discussions is the possibility of adopting a four-down system in future seasons—an idea that has been floated but not formally proposed. DiPietro calls the notion “frightening,” insisting that three downs are essential to the identity of Canadian football. He believes that shifting to four downs would erase a core strategic element and blur the distinction between the CFL and its American counterpart.

Perspective from the Trenches

Derks, who also grew up in northern Ontario and spent six seasons protecting Hamilton quarterbacks, shares concerns about the shrinking field and faster tempo. Having played college football in the United States, he says the two games should not be viewed as competitors but as unique experiences. To him, comparing CFL and NFL gameplay is like “comparing apples to oranges,” noting that fans should appreciate the distinct style each league offers.

A Season of Answers Ahead

While both former Tiger-Cats disagree with several of the upcoming changes, they say the true impact will only become clear once the season begins. As the CFL tests a new version of its storied game, players, coaches, and fans will be watching closely to see whether the updates modernize the league—or move it too far from its roots.

Week 9 of the CFL 2025 season delivered standout moments, led by Damonte Coxie, Trey Vaval, and Willie Jefferson in a thrilling week of football action.

Star Performers Define Week 9 of CFL 2025

Where: Across stadiums in Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, and Ottawa
When: Week 9 (July 30 – August 3, 2025)
What: 3DownNation’s weekly CFL awards spotlight offensive, defensive, special teams, and coaching excellence — along with best and worst plays and games.

Week 9 of the 2025 Canadian Football League (CFL) season delivered high-octane drama, career-defining plays, and breakout performances. Recognized by 3DownNation contributors, the weekly awards reflect the highs and lows across the league — as teams shift focus to crucial mid-season matchups in Week 10.

Damonte Coxie Claims Top Offensive Honour

Who: Damonte Coxie, Wide Receiver, Toronto Argonauts
Why: Dominated with 187 receiving yards, 2 TDs
How: Precision route-running, strong hands, elite yardage gains

Toronto Argonauts’ receiver Damonte Coxie lit up Winnipeg’s defence with a commanding 9-catch, 187-yard, 2-touchdown performance. Despite a narrow team loss, the Louisiana native vaulted to the top of the CFL’s receiving chart. Coxie is now just 86 yards away from a personal career high — and he’s played only eight games.

Jefferson Reignites Winnipeg’s Defence

Who: Willie Jefferson, Defensive Lineman, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Why: Key to ending Bombers’ 3-game losing streak
How: Recorded sack, forced fumble, 4 pass deflections

Veteran defensive force Willie Jefferson led a spirited Winnipeg defence against Toronto. His forced fumble directly led to a defensive touchdown by rookie Jay Person — a crucial momentum-shifter in a tightly contested game. Jefferson’s leadership and versatility reminded fans why he’s a six-time All-CFL selection.

Rookie Sensation Vaval Electrifies Special Teams

Who: Trey Vaval, Kick Returner, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Why: Historic 2-return-touchdown game
How: 93-yard kickoff & 97-yard punt return TDs

Trey Vaval’s star rose fast in Week 9, becoming just the 17th CFL player ever to score two return touchdowns in a single game. The Minnesota State product showed blistering speed and vision, scoring twice within two quarters. His breakout performance also earned him the Breakout Player of the Week nod.

Hamilton’s Line and Coaching Excellence on Display

Where: Hamilton @ Edmonton
Why: Elite offensive line and coaching impact
How: Allowed 1 sack, 350 passing yards, 3 TDs

Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ offensive line — featuring Bordner, Revenberg, Woodmansey, Dobson, and Barrow — protected quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell flawlessly, giving up just one sack. Offensive production soared, and Mitchell threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns, securing a second straight O-line award for the unit.

On the coaching front, Saskatchewan Roughriders’ offensive coordinator Marc Mueller was lauded for dismantling the league’s top-ranked Montreal defence with 34 points — a mix of aerial and ground domination.

Highlights and Lowlights: The Week in Plays and Games

Best Play: Trevor Harris (Saskatchewan) delivered a stunning back-shoulder touchdown to KeeSean Johnson — a precision pass that defied tight coverage and spatial limits.

Worst Play: Montreal’s McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw a pass straight to Saskatchewan’s Nelson Lokombo — who dropped it, then dropped to do 10 pushups in self-penalty.

Game of the Week: Toronto at Winnipeg saw explosive action across all phases — offence, defence, and special teams — with Winnipeg sealing the win in a sold-out stadium thriller.

Least Entertaining Game: Calgary at Ottawa was marred by sloppy execution. Calgary’s P.J. Walker threw three interceptions, and injuries crippled the Stamps’ offence, though Ottawa fans celebrated their team’s much-needed win.

Looking Ahead

As CFL heads into Week 10 with two divisional and two interdivisional matchups, eyes will remain on rising stars like Coxie and Vaval. With tight standings and playoff hopes brewing, the intensity is only just beginning to rise across Canadian stadiums.

On Saturday night, Snoop Dogg became an honorary B.C. Lion—at least for one unforgettable show. The iconic rapper energized a massive crowd at B.C. Place, setting the stage for the team’s CFL season opener against the Edmonton Elks.

Snoop’s Set: Hits, Surprises, and Lions Pride

Dressed in a custom B.C. Lions jersey, Snoop Dogg took the stage and launched into a 35-minute set packed with fan favorites. He treated the audience to classics like “P.I.M.P.,” “Gin and Juice,” and “Drop it Like it’s Hot.” He even surprised fans with shortened versions of tracks he’s featured on, such as Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and Akon’s “I Wanna Love You.” His backup dancers and singers also sported Lions gear, adding to the electric atmosphere.

Fans, Players, and Staff Celebrate Together

With more than 50,000 fans expected, the stadium buzzed with excitement. Hundreds packed the end zone, dancing and singing along, while thousands more joined in from their seats. Even Lions players and staff, including kicker Sean Whyte and defensive back Patrice Rene, watched parts of the show from the sidelines.

A Legacy of Music and Pop Culture

Snoop Dogg’s career spans over three decades, with seven platinum records, 20 Grammy nominations, and numerous awards. He’s a pop culture icon, known for collaborations with stars like Dr. Dre and Martha Stewart. Recently, he even served as a roving correspondent for NBC at the Paris Olympics.

Heartfelt Moments and Giveaways

At the end of his set, Snoop Dogg signed several footballs and handed them to kids in the end zone. “You’ve got to promise to grow up to be a B.C. Lion,” he told one. He also checked in with another, asking, “You getting good grades in school?” Before leaving, he signed one more football, took off his signature sunglasses and blinged-out Wu-Tang Clan ring, and gave away his gold microphone. He then launched the ball into the upper deck, formed a heart with his hands, and clapped for the crowd before making his exit.

Big Concerts: A Lions Tradition

Big-name concerts have become a staple for the B.C. Lions. Last year, rapper 50 Cent kicked off the season with a performance that drew a record crowd of 53,788. This year, Snoop Dogg kept the tradition alive, ensuring fans left the stadium buzzing before the game even began.

The post EPIC Start!

Saskatchewan Roughriders edge Ottawa REDBLACKS 31-26 in thrilling 2025 CFL season opener at Mosaic Stadium. Emilus, Bertrand-Hudon star in victory.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders kicked off their 2025 CFL campaign on a high note, defeating the Ottawa REDBLACKS 31-26 in front of an electrified crowd at Mosaic Stadium on Thursday night.

After surrendering an early touchdown, the Riders rallied and took control, never trailing again throughout the game. The victory puts Saskatchewan at 1-0 to start the season, while Ottawa falls to 0-1.

Emilus and Bertrand-Hudon Power Saskatchewan Offense

Receiver Samuel Emilus was a dominant force for the Roughriders, catching all eight passes thrown his way for 133 yards and a touchdown. Thomas Bertrand-Hudon, stepping in for an injured AJ Ouellette, made the most of his opportunity with two touchdowns — one on the ground and one through the air.

Quarterback Trevor Harris spread the ball efficiently and found rhythm early, while the defence provided timely stops and big plays to hold off a late Ottawa surge.

Brown’s Strong Debut Not Enough for Ottawa

Despite the loss, REDBLACKS quarterback Dru Brown had an impressive outing, completing 34 of 41 passes for 413 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Eugene Lewis, who extended his touchdown streak to nine straight games, and William Stanback each scored in their Ottawa debuts.

Brown opened the game with a surgical touchdown drive, culminating in a one-yard plunge by Dustin Crum to give the REDBLACKS an early 7-0 lead. But Saskatchewan responded swiftly, scoring 24 unanswered points to swing the momentum.

Key Moments and Turning Points

The Riders capitalized on strong field position and defensive stops, with Malik Carney’s sack and multiple turnovers helping to stall Ottawa’s drives. A 60-yard return by Mario Alford flipped the field after a missed field goal, setting up Saskatchewan’s first major.

Harris’ deep connection to Emilus in the second quarter put the Riders ahead 14-7, and a roughing-the-passer penalty helped set up another score just before halftime. A 13-yard field goal by Brett Lauther made it 17-7 going into the break.

In the third quarter, Saskatchewan extended its lead with Bertrand-Hudon’s receiving touchdown, followed by another rushing major that pushed the score to 31-14.

Ottawa Fights Back but Falls Short

Ottawa clawed back with a touchdown from Lewis, a short-yardage score by Stanback, and a 27-yard strike to Justin Hardy. However, two failed two-point conversions and a late fumble recovery that yielded no points left the REDBLACKS trailing.

With under three minutes to play, Ottawa had multiple opportunities but could not convert, sealing the Riders’ season-opening win.

What’s Next
