Surrey’s Vaisakhi Parade Thrives with 550,000 Attendees!

The streets of Newton were alive with excitement on Saturday, April 19, as over 550,000 people gathered for the vibrant Nagar Kirtan (Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade). This annual event not only showcased the unity and diversity of Surrey but also highlighted the importance of community and cultural sharing.

A Celebration of Sikh Traditions and Values

From the early morning, the parade started at Gurdwara Sahib Darbar and moved through various streets, creating a colorful spectacle that concluded at the same Gurdwara around 5 p.m. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji float was the centerpiece, symbolizing the Sikh faith’s reverence for their sacred scripture, which was honored throughout the procession.

The Vaisakhi Festival, marking the creation of the Khalsa order by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699, is one of the most significant days in Sikhism. The Surrey parade is known as one of the largest Khalsa Day celebrations globally, drawing people from all cultures to come together in a shared experience of peace, spirituality, and goodwill.

A Day of Food, Fun, and Community Spirit

As participants enjoyed the live music and vibrant floats, the streets were lined with hundreds of booths, offering free food, treats, and refreshments to parade-goers. Families and local businesses contributed to the festive atmosphere, making the event more than just a religious celebration but a communal gathering for all to enjoy.

Celebrating Diversity and Community Contributions

Politicians from across the spectrum, including Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, Premier David Eby, and Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, joined the celebrations, expressing their deep gratitude to the Sikh community for their contributions to Surrey and the broader British Columbia area.

Mayor Locke shared, “The Sikh community has contributed more than we can ever say to the City of Surrey; we are a better city because of you.” Premier Eby echoed these sentiments, highlighting the unity Vaisakhi brings to the province, especially in the face of challenges to tolerance and togetherness.

Reflecting on Sikh Values

As the parade came to a close, Jagmeet Singh thanked everyone for their participation, reminding attendees of the Khalsa’s historical significance and the enduring relevance of Sikh values in today’s world. In a time where division is often celebrated, Vaisakhi serves as a reminder of the strength found in unity, the importance of supporting one another, and the role of love and respect for all faiths.
