Surrey Mayor Calls for Stronger Cross-Border Cooperation Amid Tariff Challenges

On Thursday, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke participated in a crucial roundtable discussion held in the City of Blaine, Washington. The focus of the conversation was on the ongoing challenges posed by tariffs on cross-border trade and their negative effects on local economies in both Canada and the United States.

The event, which was organized by Washington Senator Patty Murray, brought together a diverse group of community leaders, business representatives, and local officials to address the critical issues surrounding current tariff policies. Much of the discussion centered around the economic struggles faced by border communities, including the difficulties local businesses are encountering due to the implementation of tariffs.

Mayor Locke expressed her concern over the broader implications of tariffs, stating, “Tariffs are more than just economic policies; they serve as a tax on our people and businesses, threatening the very fabric of our communities.” She emphasized the urgency of cities coming together to advocate for fair trade practices. “As we navigate these challenges, it is essential that cities unite to ensure policies are in place that protect our communities and encourage sustainable economic growth. In British Columbia, we have longstanding, meaningful relationships with Washington State, and it is critical that we continue to build on these partnerships. As neighbors with intertwined economies, fostering open trade and collaboration has never been more important.”

During her visit to Blaine, Mayor Locke highlighted the interconnectedness of the Pacific Northwest’s economic landscape, noting how both regions have historically benefitted from robust free trade practices. As the home of Canada’s largest border crossing, Surrey directly feels the impact of daily trade, making it an essential player in the broader discussion on cross-border economic relations.

“I want to express my sincere thanks to Senator Patty Murray for her leadership and vision in bringing us together for this important conversation,” Mayor Locke continued. “It is conversations like this one that are pivotal in fostering a prosperous future for Surrey, Blaine, and the entire Pacific Northwest corridor.”

Through this roundtable, leaders from both sides of the border reinforced the shared understanding that continued economic collaboration is vital to overcoming the current challenges. With an increased focus on fairness and efficiency in trade, the hope is to see a more resilient and thriving Pacific Northwest in the years to come.

This roundtable discussion marked another significant step toward ensuring that both Canada and the United States remain committed to supporting each other through difficult economic times while embracing the mutual benefits that have long come from their proximity and trade partnerships. As Mayor Locke concluded, the future of these intertwined economies will rely on maintaining strong and cooperative relationships for the long term.
