Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, took aim at Liberal spending and inflation during his Surrey campaign stop.
As the federal election nears its final week, Poilievre continued his attack on Liberal leader Mark Carney, criticizing his tenure as the Governor of the Bank of England for high inflation. Speaking at a Surrey grocery store on Easter Sunday morning, Poilievre pledged to “axe the inflation tax” and vowed to end the Liberals’ overspending if his party wins.
A Conservative Vision for Reducing Costs
Poilievre used his platform to promise drastic changes under a Conservative government, particularly in the areas of inflation and the high cost of living. He specifically addressed Mark Carney’s role in the UK’s inflation crisis, pointing out that Carney, as the Bank of England’s governor, was partly blamed for the soaring inflation rates in the UK during his tenure.
“If elected, the Conservative government will slash wasteful spending,” Poilievre declared. “We will axe the inflation tax and take bold action to reduce bureaucracy, cut foreign aid, and trim the fat in government spending.”
One of his notable promises included slashing $10 billion annually by cutting the budget for consultants. Poilievre also restated the Conservatives’ plan to repeal “anti-development laws”, eliminate the energy production cap, and fast-track 10 key resource projects.
He also doubled down on criticizing the Liberals’ $130 billion in spending, which he called “costly Liberal inflation” and a heavy burden on Canadian families.
“Mark Carney is even more costly than Justin Trudeau,” Poilievre added, urging voters to choose lower taxes and controlled spending.
Safety, Crime, and Border Security
Poilievre didn’t shy away from discussing the rising concerns around crime and safety in Canada. He stressed that a Conservative government would focus on “locking up criminals, securing the border, and stopping crime.”
Kerry-Lynne Findlay, the Conservative candidate for South Surrey-White Rock, who introduced Poilievre at the event, echoed his sentiment, emphasizing that “it’s time for a change of government in Ottawa.”
“It’s clear that the Liberals do not deserve a fourth term,” Findlay stated, aligning with Poilievre’s calls for reform and a new approach to governance.
The Political Landscape: What’s Next?
As the election draws closer, advance voting continues, with Poilievre’s Conservative platform yet to be released with a costed breakdown. In contrast, Carney’s Liberals and Jagmeet Singh’s NDP rolled out their costed platforms earlier in the week.
With Poilievre’s bold promises to tackle inflation, reduce taxes, and address crime, the next few days are set to be crucial for Canada’s political future.
