More than 600 tickets were issued after Shambhala Music Festival, including 78 drug-impaired driving cases and dozens of vehicle bans.

Police Crack Down After Major B.C. Festival

More than 600 drivers faced penalties after police carried out road checks following a major music festival in British Columbia’s Kootenay region.

The BC Highway Patrol said officers issued 601 tickets before the Shambhala Music Festival near Salmo. Most offences involved speeding. However, the biggest concern came after the festival, when police found many drivers unable to safely get behind the wheel.

Drug-Impaired Driving Leads to Dozens of Bans

After the event ended, police set up roadblocks and identified 78 cases of drug-impaired driving. As a result, more than 50 drivers received immediate driving bans.

In addition, 57 vehicles were removed from the road because of driver impairment or mechanical safety concerns.

The enforcement effort followed the festival’s turnout of more than 50,000 attendees, with officers focusing on keeping highways safe before and after the event.

Police Warn Festival-Goers About Road Safety

BC Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael McLaughlin said officers had already warned festival visitors to wait until any substances had fully left their system before driving.

Still, the number of violations showed that some drivers ignored those warnings. Therefore, police said a stronger presence could return for next year’s festival.

McLaughlin also pointed to another serious issue: 11 drivers were caught without insurance.

He said combining uninsured vehicles with speeding offences showed “irresponsible decision-making” and urged drivers to make safer choices on shared roads.

Shambhala Festival Draws Thousands to Salmo

The Shambhala Music Festival ran from July 24 to 27 at Salmo River Ranch and marked its 27th annual event.

Salmo is located in southeastern B.C., about 650 kilometres east of Vancouver and roughly 25 kilometres from the Canada-U.S. border.

As festival season continues across the province, police say responsible driving remains essential to protecting everyone travelling home.

The post B.C.

Island Health warns people to avoid swimming at Langford Lake, Gonzales Bay and Cadboro Bay after bacteria levels exceeded safe limits.

Swimming Ban Issued After Bacteria Levels Spike

If you’re planning a day at the beach, you may want to rethink your plans. Island Health has issued swimming advisories for Langford Lake, Gonzales Bay Beach, and Cadboro Gyro Park Beach after recent water tests found bacteria levels above safe limits.

Health officials say the affected waters could increase the risk of illness. As a result, residents and visitors should avoid swimming or taking part in any activity that involves direct contact with the water until further notice.

Langford Lake Records One of Its Highest E. Coli Readings

Water samples collected on Monday near the Leigh Road boat ramp at Langford Lake revealed an E. coli count of 732 per 100 millilitres.

That figure marks the second-highest reading since Island Health and the Capital Regional District began monitoring the lake in 2014. The highest level on record came in July 2018, when testing found 1,100 E. coli per 100 millilitres.

Island Health issues a swimming advisory whenever E. coli levels rise above 400 per 100 millilitres. Therefore, the latest reading exceeded the safety threshold by a wide margin.

Victoria Beaches Also Under Advisory

Meanwhile, Gonzales Bay Beach and Cadboro Gyro Park Beach are also under public health advisories.

Testing found elevated levels of enterococci, another type of bacteria that signals possible fecal contamination. Both beaches recorded 100 enterococci per 100 millilitres, while Island Health recommends advisories once levels exceed 70 per 100 millilitres.

Because of these results, both beaches remain unsafe for swimming and other water activities.

Health Officials Urge the Public to Stay Out of the Water

Exposure to water with high bacteria levels can increase the risk of stomach illnesses, skin infections, and other health problems. For that reason, Island Health advises everyone to avoid entering the water at the affected locations until follow-up testing confirms that conditions have improved.

Officials will continue monitoring water quality, and the advisories will stay in place until bacteria levels return to safe standards.

What Swimmers Should Know

Anyone planning to visit Langford Lake, Gonzales Bay Beach, or Cadboro Gyro Park Beach should check the latest public health updates before heading out. In the meantime, choosing another beach or outdoor activity is the safest option while water quality remains under review.

The post Swimming Advisory Issued for Langford Lake and Two Victoria Beaches first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Sometimes everything just clicks. And on Sunday, that’s exactly what happened in Vancouver.

North Vancouver’s own Natasha Wodak ran a powerful race at the BMO Vancouver Half Marathon. In fact, she crossed the finish line in 1:12:01, which broke the previous course record.

Moreover, the two-time Olympian didn’t just win. She also made history while racing close to home.

Even better, it marked her fifth time finishing at the top of this event. So, it was both familiar and special for her.

A Strong Comeback After a Tough Week

Interestingly, this big win came right after a rough performance.

Just one week earlier, Wodak struggled at the Times Colonist 10K in Victoria. At that race, she finished third and even described feeling “horrible.”

However, things felt very different this time around.

This time, she felt light, strong, and relaxed. In addition, she said she enjoyed chatting with friends before the race, which helped her mindset.

As a result, she settled into a steady rhythm early on and never looked back.

Even though she was tracking her pace, she still didn’t realize she was on record speed until she finished.

So, when she saw the official time, she was genuinely surprised but very happy.

Home Crowd Energy Made a Difference

Because the race took place in Vancouver, the experience felt extra meaningful.

Wodak also returned to this event after missing it last year due to injury. Therefore, this comeback carried even more weight.

Meanwhile, her parents were there at the finish line. They celebrated with her right after she crossed.

Clearly, the home support added even more joy to an already special moment.

Eyes Now Turn to the Ottawa Marathon

Even though the record is a big achievement, Wodak is already looking ahead.

In just a few weeks, she will race the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon on May 24.

Furthermore, she is treating the half marathon as part of her preparation. She still plans one more long run of about 37 kilometres before race day.

In addition, she may use sauna sessions to help prepare for warmer conditions.

Her goal in Ottawa is ambitious. She wants to finish under 2 hours and 29 minutes, place in the top five overall, and be the fastest Canadian.

So, the focus is now shifting from speed to endurance.

Other Standout Performances at BMO Weekend

Elsewhere on the course, several athletes also delivered strong results.

For example, UVic alum Russell Pennock earned silver in the men’s marathon. He finished just 30 seconds behind the winner.

Meanwhile, Mikky Keetels of the Netherlands set a new women’s marathon record.

In addition, Ontario’s Danya Pidhoresky stayed close behind in a strong second-place finish.

On the men’s half marathon side, Max Turek of Ontario took gold with a fast and confident run.

A Day of Fast Times and Big Energy

Overall, the BMO Vancouver Marathon weekend delivered exciting races and standout performances.

And yet, the spotlight clearly belonged to Wodak.

Because of her strong finish, her record run, and her upcoming goals, she now heads into Ottawa with momentum and confidence.

New poll shows Canadians want limits on algorithmic pricing, citing fairness concerns and growing use in retail and housing.

Canadians Say “Enough” to Price Algorithms

Canadians are speaking up—and clearly, they’re not thrilled. A new poll reveals that most people across the country want the government to either ban or tightly regulate algorithmic pricing. In other words, many feel it’s time to draw a line.

So, what’s driving this frustration? Simply put, people don’t like the idea of paying more than someone else for the exact same thing.

What Is Algorithmic Pricing, Anyway?

To begin with, algorithmic pricing means prices change in real time. These shifts depend on factors like who you are, when you shop, and even how you browse online. For example, two people could look at the same product and see two different prices.

Because of this, concerns about fairness are rising fast. While this system already exists in industries like travel, it is now spreading into retail and even rental housing. As a result, more Canadians are noticing—and questioning—it.

Poll Results Show Strong Public Opinion

According to the survey by Abacus Data, opinions are quite firm. In fact, half of those surveyed said the practice is unfair. They believe it creates unequal pricing for the same product, which feels wrong.

At the same time, support for action is strong. About 50% of respondents want algorithmic pricing banned outright. Meanwhile, 31% say it should still exist—but under stricter rules.

Clearly, very few people are comfortable leaving things as they are.

Governments Begin to Respond

Interestingly, some governments are already stepping in. For instance, Manitoba recently announced a move to stop retailers from using personal data to raise prices for certain customers.

This step signals a shift. Although algorithmic pricing continues to grow, governments are starting to pay attention to public concerns.

A Debate That’s Just Getting Started

Even though the poll was conducted online and doesn’t carry a traditional margin of error, it still highlights a strong trend. Canadians are paying attention, and more importantly, they are asking questions.

So, what happens next? That remains to be seen. However, as technology evolves, the conversation around fairness, privacy, and pricing will only grow louder.

One thing is clear—Canadians want transparency, and they want it now.

The post Canadians Push Back on Algorithmic Pricing first appeared on Maple News Wire.

The U.S. women’s team won the gold medal for the third time in history by defeating Canada 2‑1 in the final. Knight, one of the most decorated players in American hockey, said she wanted the spotlight on her team’s achievements.

Trump made a comment during a phone call with the U.S. men’s hockey team after their gold medal win. He invited the men to the State of the Union and joked that he would have to invite the women too or face impeachment. Some players were heard laughing, and a video of the exchange went viral. The remark quickly became a talking point across social media and sports forums.

Knight, appearing on SportsCenter, described the comment as a “distasteful joke” that shifted attention away from the women’s success. She said the narrative around the remark has overshadowed her team’s historic performance and broader achievements at the Olympics. Knight stressed that her focus — and that of her teammates — remains on celebrating their hard‑earned victory.

She highlighted the strong support and respect between the men’s and women’s teams. Knight acknowledged that her men’s counterparts share camaraderie and encouragement, despite the awkward moment. She said the situation should strengthen understanding about how women are discussed in sports and other fields.

Reactions from Teammates and Opponents

The U.S. women’s team declined the White House invitation, citing prior commitments. They chose to celebrate their gold medal in ways that honour their achievements and commitments.

Knight’s comments reflect a wider call within sport for equal recognition of women’s accomplishments. She urged people to focus on the milestones reached by female athletes at the Olympics. Knight said these achievements deserve celebration without distraction.

Her remarks have sparked discussion beyond hockey, with fans and commentators weighing in on how athletic success and political moments intersect. Knight hopes the conversation will lead to greater respect and visibility for women’s sports.

London Juniors Create Anthem for Team Canada

LONDON, Ont. — The London Nationals junior hockey team is sending an energetic message from their rink to the world: “We Shoot, We Score!”

With the men’s Olympic hockey semi-final looming in Italy, the Nationals turned their dressing room into a stage, performing a spirited anthem set to the tune of O Canada. The song, written by longtime hockey enthusiast Bruce Stock, is designed to celebrate everything Canadians love about the sport.

A Homegrown Hockey Anthem

Stock, who hails from the hockey-crazy town of Timmins, Ont., said the anthem fills a gap he’s long noticed.

“It’s always bothered me that we don’t have a song to celebrate our game,” he explained. “This is about skill, speed, the fire, and everything that makes hockey special to Canadians.”

Stock coaches the Nationals and worked closely with the players to bring the anthem to life.

From London to Olympic Ice

After Thursday’s practice, the team recorded their performance in the dressing room, creating a heartfelt cheer to send to Team Canada as they prepare to face Finland.

Dean Pomerleau, one of the Nationals’ players, described the experience as “fun and meaningful.” “We’re honoured to wish the guys the best chance at gold,” he said.

Dreaming of a Nationwide Sing-Along

Stock’s vision goes beyond a single video. He imagines fans in rinks across Canada joining in for a collective celebration.

“There are 2,860 indoor arenas in Canada,” Stock said. “Imagine all of them standing up and singing together. That would be a first for the nation.”

For the London Nationals, the message is simple: from one rink to another, Canada is cheering loud and proud.

The post We Shoot, We Score!

Toronto Tempo Coach Eyes Preparation Despite WNBA Delays

With the Women’s National Basketball Association season approaching, Toronto’s expansion franchise is still without a playing roster, but head coach Sandy Brondello says her focus remains on preparation and strategy as she gets ready for the Tempo’s debut. The team’s build-up has been affected by league-wide delays in finalizing a collective bargaining agreement, which has paused free agency and stalled player signings.

Building Behind the Scenes Without Players Yet

Brondello, who has a long record of success as a player and coach in the WNBA, told CBC Sports she is concentrating on the foundational work the team can control while waiting for negotiations to conclude. With no players officially signed yet, Tempo staff are scouting prospects, watching college games, and planning for the expansion draft and free agent targets once the labour situation clears.

Experience Guides Planning Through Uncertainty

The coach said her two decades of experience have helped her navigate the unusual situation, describing it as a test of patience and adaptability. Brondello acknowledged that once the CBA is settled, the team will have a very compressed timeframe to assemble its roster and establish a playing identity before the season begins.

Tempo Growth Continues Off the Court

While the player side of operations waits on labour talks, the Tempo have continued building their coaching staff and organizational structure, a sign the franchise is positioning itself for long-term competitiveness even amid uncertainty. The Tempo will be the first Canadian team in the WNBA, set to begin play in 2026 at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum.

The post Tempo Coach Brondello Prepares for WNBA Debut Amid Uncertainty first appeared on Maple News Wire.

Montreal, Canada — Canadian actress and comedian Claire Brosseau (48) has made headlines for her decision to seek medically assisted suicide after decades of struggle with severe mental health issues. Brosseau says she has battled manic depression, anxiety, chronic suicidal thoughts, PTSD, eating disorders, and substance abuse since her teens. Despite years of treatment, she finds her suffering “unbearable.”

Brosseau first applied for Canada’s Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) program in 2021. MAiD allows eligible people with grievous and irremediable medical conditions to end their lives with medical support. However, current rules do not yet allow mental illness alone as a qualifying condition. This exclusion has been delayed until at least 2027, keeping Brosseau ineligible despite her requests.

Decades of Treatment, Still Suffering

Brosseau has undergone extensive mental health treatment across North America. She has tried more than two dozen medications, multiple therapies, and even guided psychedelic therapy. None provided lasting relief. She has openly described several suicide attempts over her lifetime and enduring pain she feels cannot be relieved.

Legal Fight and Rights Debate

Brosseau has joined a lawsuit with Dying With Dignity Canada, claiming that excluding people with mental illness from MAiD is discriminatory. She argues that people with untreatable psychiatric conditions should have the same rights as those with serious physical conditions. Her case raises complex ethical and legal questions about how society handles mental health and end-of-life choices.

Medical Perspectives Differ

Even among her psychiatrists, opinions differ. One specialist believes Brosseau could still recover, while another says it is unfair that mental illness sufferers are excluded from MAiD when they endure real, lifelong suffering. These contrasting views reflect wider debates within medicine and ethics.

Broader Implications

Brosseau’s case underscores ongoing public and legal discussions in Canada. It highlights tensions between patient autonomy, mental health care access, and the criteria for medically assisted dying. As her legal challenge proceeds, it may influence future policy on how Canada balances compassionate care with ethical safeguards.

The post Canadian Actress Claire Brosseau Seeks Assisted Suicide Under MAiD first appeared on Maple News Wire.
